AOA Iota Chapter Celebrates Annual Lecture and Induction Banquet

The New York Iota chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA), the national medical honor society, hosted its annual visiting professor lecture, banquet and induction ceremony on April 25 at 19 Skyline Drive. D. Douglas Miller, M.D., C.M., M.B.A., left, dean of the School of Medicine, and William H. Frishman, M.D., the Barbara and William Rosenthal Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine, professor of pharmacology and councilor of the Iota chapter, welcomed keynote speaker Kimberly Manning, M.D., associate professor of medicine, director, Distinction in Teaching and Leadership at the Emory University School of Medicine. D.P.T. Class of 2017 Celebrates at Thirteenth Annual Doctoral Project Presentation Day

Candidates for the degree doctorate of physical therapy (D.P.T.) in the School of Health Sciences and Practice, took one step closer to graduation on April 20 when they presented their research projects at the Thirteenth Annual Doctoral Project Presentation Day. Groups of students presented 11 platform presentations on their work on issues in one of three areas germane to physical therapy: clinical research, education, or service. Breathing a collective sigh of relief after completing the graduation requisite, the D.P.T. Class of 2017 listened to keynote speaker Marilyn Moffat, P.T., D.P.T., Ph.D., D.Sc. (hon), GCS, CSCS, CEEAA, FAPTA, professor of physical therapy at the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, who presented "Prevention and Management of Non-communicable Diseases: The Role of Physical Therapists." Dr. Moffat, a practitioner, teacher, consultant and author, is a recognized leader in physical therapy in the United States and internationally, and served a six-year term as president of the American Physical Therapy Association. NYMC Reflects on Yom Hashoah

New York Medical College observed Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, on April 24 with an evening talk, "The Central Role of Neuroscientists under National Socialism: Links to the Holocaust and Medical Ethics," presented by guest speaker Lawrence A. Zeidman, M.D., far left, associate professor, University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago, director, AANEM-accredited EMG Laboratory, director, Neuropathies and Nerve Injuries Multidisciplinary, clinic director, Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship, University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago Department of Neurology and Rehabilitation. Dr. Zeidman has a keen interest in the history and ethics of neurology, especially during World War II, and has published numerous articles on the ethical issues involved in that era that have an impact on modern day neurology. AMWA presents 2017 Gender Equity Faculty Award to Susan Rachlin, M.D.

The NYMC chapter of the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) honored Susan Rachlin, M.D., center, associate dean for student affairs, School of Medicine, advisory house dean and associate professor of clinical radiology, with the 2017 Gender Equity Faculty Award at a ceremony held on April 26 in the cafeteria. The annual award recognizes a faculty member for promoting a gender-fair environment for the education and training of women physicians, and to assure equal opportunities for women and men to study and practice medicine. NYMC AMWA co-presidents Roya Yavari, left, and Nam Lee, members of the School of Medicine Class of 2019, presented the award, calling Dr. Rachlin a "role model" and "inspiration" for her efforts to promote inclusion and gender equity at NYMC.

Turkeys Return to Campus

Two turkey sculptures that once stood guard on the stone pillars in front of Sunshine Cottage when it was a pediatric tuberculosis sanatorium have returned to campus. The newly refurbished statues, part of a campus-wide effort to restore NYMC's historical treasures, adorn the walkway connecting the Medical Education Center driveway to the Alumni House.
