Department of Family and Community Medicine Hosts Fifth Annual Research Day
The Department of Family and Community Medicine hosted its Fifth Annual Research Day on May 10 in the Skyline dining room to showcase the research of students, residents and faculty. Sonia A. Velez, M.D., J.D., assistant professor of family and community medicine and interim chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine, welcomed the audience, noting the increasing focus on research in family medicine and prevention and population health across the nation. She also welcomed the day's keynote speaker Neil S. Calman, M.D., professor and system chair and The Alfred and Gail Engelberg Department of Family Medicine and Community Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the Mount Sinai Health System. He is also the chief executive officer and co-founder of The Institute for Family Health. Dr. Calman shared his vast research experiences and the challenges of conducting research in family medicine which requires different methods than traditional research and must focus on the patient outcome. Warmer Weather and Campus Greenery Gets NYMC Moving
 Now that spring is here, and the campus is in full bloom, the New York Medical College community is out walking, and taking the opportunity to enjoy the scenery of our 54-acre campus. The paths that line the campus, including two new ones built last year, are dotted with distance markers to help walkers track their progress. The Centers for Disease Control recommends adults engage in 150 minutes of moderate activity, such as walking, each week. View maps of paths on the NYMC campus here.

Anubhav G. Amin, M.D., PGY-4 resident in the Department of Neurosurgery, delivered a platform presentation, "Histological Subtypes Correlate with Distinct Genetic Abnormalities in Defining Therapeutic Targets" at the American Association of Neurological Surgeons Meeting, held in Los Angeles, on April 26. The scientific work was done under the supervision of Meena Jhanwar-Uniyal, Ph.D., research associate professor of neurosurgery.

Meena Jhanwar-Uniyal, Ph.D., research associate professor of neurosurgery, delivered talks on "Tumors of the Nervous System: with reference to Glioblastoma, Medulloblastoma and Metastatic Brian Tumors," at Santa Marcelina Hospital, Sao Paulo, Brazil, on April 17. She was also invited to give two lectures, "Genomic Analysis of Childhood Tumors: From Bench-to-Bedside," and "Distinct Genetic Aspects of the Childhood Cancer Medulloblastoma: Diagnosis, Prognosis and Therapeutic Approaches," at the pre-congress course on neuro-oncology, XII SBN Pediatric Neurosurgery Conference, held in Florinopolis, Brazil, on April 19-21.

Anvita Gupta, left, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, received the prestigious Anna Steinberger Award at the 43rd Annual Meeting of the American Society for Andrology, held in Portland, Oreg., April 20 - 24. Ms. Gupta presented oral and poster presentations of her research on the "Implications of androgen receptor activation on thyroid cancer phenotype." Ms. Gupta is completing her Ph.D. thesis in the laboratory of Jan Geliebter, Ph.D., professor of microbiology and immunology and associate professor of otolaryngology, and works with Raj K. Tiwari, Ph.D., professor of microbiology and immunology and associate professor of otolaryngology, and Augustine L. Moscatello, M.D., professor of clinical otolaryngology and chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology, on the molecular basis of androgen inhibition of thyroid cancer cell growth.

 Stuart A. Newman, Ph.D., professor of cell biology and anatomy and medicine, participated in the third workshop of the program "Integrating Generic and Genetic Explanations of Biological Phenomena" at the Minnesota Center for Philosophy of Science at the University of Minnesota from April 27 - 30. The topic of the workshop was "Evolvability." Dr. Newman is a member of the core group of the multi-year program, which is supported by the John Templeton Foundation and was inspired by Dr. Newman's 1990 paper with Wayne D. Comper, Ph.D., D.Sc., in the journal Development, "'Generic' physical mechanisms of morphogenesis and pattern formation."
