Capstone Projects Address Challenging Issues

Master of Public Health students in the School of Health Sciences and Practice celebrated an important milestone in their academic programs with last week's capstone presentations. Capstone projects match small groups of students with outside organizations to address, analyze and provide potential solutions for a problem affecting health, health care or health care delivery. For students, this is an important opportunity to put the knowledge and skills gained at NYMC to the test in real-world projects. Participating organizations and stakeholders benefit from those tools and from the fresh perspective the students bring to their work.

Thi s year's projects were rooted in challenging issues, including evaluating a teen pregnancy prevention program in White Plains; developing an emergency food distribution plan in the event of a county-wide disaster; and an analysis of tuberculosis-related health care and emergency services to undocumented immigrants in Queens, N.Y. Two of the projects presented won first and second place, as well as the Members' Choice Award at the New York State Public Health Association's (NYSPHA) 66th Annual Meeting and Conference (See next story).
