NYMC Announces New Clinical Leadership in the School of Medicine 





The New York Medical College (NYMC) School of Medicine (SOM) is pleased to announce the appointments of new clinical chairs: Peter Panzica, M.D., left, chair of the Department of Anesthesiology; Sean Tedjarati, M.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., center, chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, effective July 1; and Edward Lebovics, M.D., interim chair of the Department of Medicine, effective September 1. Conference Addresses How the Microbiome Impacts Health and Wellness 

It was a full house at the Microbiome Conference at 7 Dana Road on June 12 when clinical, basic research and industry experts shared their work on microbiome science and its role in maintaining health and causing a gamut of disease. The half-day symposium featured remarks by College leadership including Alan Kadish, M.D., president, Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer, and Jerry L. Nadler, M.D., MACP, FAHA, FACE, dean of the School of Medicine. Guest speakers covered the topics of fecal transplants, the role of bacterial metacolony in chronic tonsillar hypertrophy, meta genomic and metatranscriptomic profiling of mouse gut microbiota, intestinal microbiomes in sickle cell disease and population studies of gut microbiome, diet and human health. Read the full article and view the Microbiome Conference photo gallery.

Robert B. Nadelman, M.D., Research Fellowship Pays Tribute to Esteemed Professor 

In March of 2018, Robert B. Nadelman, M.D., long-standing professor of medicine at New York Medical College (NYMC) passed away and soon after, his students endeavored to find a way to honor the memory of their esteemed teacher. "Dr. Nadelman was the epitome of the clinician scientist, a prolific researcher and a compassionate and skilled infectious diseases physician. He was a dedicated mentor of young physicians-in-training, a genuinely supportive colleague and the father of Dr. Rebecca Nadelman, School of Medicine Class of 2019," explained Mary M. ACCOLADES

Mitchell S. Cairo, M.D., professor of pediatrics, division of pediatric hematology, oncology and stem cell transplantation, and professor of medicine, pathology, microbiology and immunology, and cell biology and anatomy, presented "Haploidentical Transplants: A New Reality in Sickle Cell Disease" at the Cellular Therapies Symposium II: Engineering the Future Conference presented by the UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital Division of Pediatric Hematology Oncology on June 12.



William H. Frishman, M.D.
, left, the Barbara and William Rosenthal Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine and professor of pharmacology, was honored for his 50 years of service in medicine at the Westchester County Medical Society and Westchester Academy of Medicine Annual Meeting on June 13 at the Westchester Country Club. Omar Syed, M.D., president of the Westchester County Medical Society, presented him with a plaque.




Harriette Rosen Mogul, M.D., M.P.H., clinical associate professor of medicine, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine 61st commencement exercises on May 23 at Lincoln Center.

The paper, Sleeper cells: the stringent response and persistence in the Borreliella (Borrelia) burgdorferi enzootic cycle, by Felipe C. Cabello, M.D., professor emeritus of microbiology and immunology, Henry P. Godfrey, M.D., Ph.D., professor of pathology, Julia Bugrysheva, Ph.D. '05, and Stuart A. Newman, Ph.D., professor of cell biology and anatomy, published in Environmental Microbiology in 2017, was identified by Wiley and Sons as one the most downloaded articles in the journal after a year of publication. The paper put forward the hypothesis that the stringent response, a reaction of bacteria to stress, may be involved in the tolerance of the Lyme Disease pathogen to antimicrobials and its persistence in its insect and mammalian hosts.
