The Café Grand Opening Draws a Crowd
On May 29, New York Medical College's (NYMC) coffee and tea enthusiasts converged on the renovated Café, in the Basic Sciences Building, to celebrate the long-awaited gathering place featuring Starbucks-brewed coffee and drinks including seasonal favorites, breakfast pastries, grab-and-go salads and sandwiches, candy, snacks, as well as toiletry, convenience items and NYMC merchandise.

Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy Hosts Annual Research Forum
A wealth of research projects by high school students, undergraduates, M.S., Ph.D., and M.D./Ph.D. candidates and postdoctoral fellows were presented at the annual Cell Biology Research Forum on May 29. Judges Arthur J.L. Cooper, Ph.D., D.Sc., professor of biochemistry and molecular biology; Esther L. Sabban, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and molecular biology; and Michael S. Wolin, Ph.D., professor of physiology; evaluated the student research and their communication and presentation skills.

College Hosts 9th Annual Paul K. Woolf, M.D., Pediatric Trainee Research Day
The Department of Pediatrics hosted the 9th Annual Paul K. Woolf, M.D., Pediatrics Research Day on May 15, to highlight new and innovative biomedical research in pediatrics and foster academic discussions.
Abstracts were judged in clinical, quality, translational and basic research categories. The event honors the memory of the late Paul K. Woolf, M.D., senior associate dean for Westchester Medical Center and associate professor of pediatrics, who passed away in 2010 at the age of 59.

NYMC Observes World Hypertension Day
 DigiTouch Health, a client of BioInc@NYMC, sponsored free blood pressure screenings on May 17, in observance of World Hypertension Day. Nearly 80 participants were screened in the Hales Lobby with the assistance of student volunteers. Each participant was screened using a traditional blood pressure cuff, as well as with the Digitouch blood pressure sensor, to compare results and educate people about blood pressure measurement. Marc Zemel, CEO and co-founder of Digitouch Health, explained they are developing advanced algorithms and sensors for monitoring blood pressure, including a sensor to monitor blood pressure by pressing a button on a mobile device.

Wilbert S. Aronow, M.D., professor of medicine, was recognized as a "World Expert" on hypertension by Expertscape during National High Blood Pressure Education Month in May. He was ranked in the top 0.1% of scholars writing about hypertension over the past 10 years.

Farhana Begum, pictured, and Brittany Dodson, members of the School of Medicine Class of 2020, presented, "Community Health Assessment of Muslim Women at an East Harlem Islamic Center," at the 14th Annual Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) Resident/Fellow and Medical Student Poster Symposium at the MSSNY House of Delegates Meeting in Tarrytown, New York, April 11 - 14. The study was done jointly by New York Medical College and NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan at the Islamic Cultural Center of New York (ICCNY). Through Metropolitan's needs assessment survey, they presented a retrospective analysis of the health needs survey completed by worshippers at the ICCNY, which houses the largest mosque in the New York City area. The aim of the study was to open a dialogue to assess and understand the health care needs of Muslims in New York City by creating a representative health profile.

Rajamma Mathew, M.D., associate professor of clinical pediatrics, presented "Loss of Caveolae in Smooth Muscle Cells: Possible Role in Neointima Formation in Pulmonary Hypertension" at the first international EMBO Workshop on "Caveolae and Nanodomains: Translating Structural Principles and Dynamics into Function," in Le Pouliguen, France, May 12 - 16.
