NYMC Students Distribute Masks and Good Will with the Mask Transit Project
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and medical student clinical rotations were canceled, Shreya Makkapati, School of Medicine (SOM) Class 2021, knew she wanted to continue some form of patient care. That opportunity arose in early April when she was approached by Aishwarya Raja, a medical student at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, whom she met through a group for Indian females in medicine. Ms. Raja is a founder of Mask Transit, a grassroots organization that distributes masks and educational material about mask hygiene to vulnerable populations -- populations Ms. Makkapati cared for during most of her third-year clerkships. NYMC Receives $594K NIH Shared Instrumentation Grant
The collaborative efforts by a team of New York Medical College (NYMC) faculty researchers from across all of the basic science disciplines have paid off to the tune of nearly $594,269. The grant proposal team made up of nearly 20 NYMC faculty and led by Dana G. Mordue, Ph.D., associate professor of microbiology and immunology, secured a Shared Instrumentation Grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which will be used to purchase a new high-resolution confocal microscope. This new microscope will be critical to the College's biomedical research. The confocal system will allow NYMC's researchers to quantitatively visualize dynamic processes in living specimens gently over extended periods of time (4D imaging). The increased sensitivity and high resolution will be particularly valuable to image thicker tissue sections/slices in a wide variety of biological specimens. Read the full article on the NIH grant.

Chancellor Hosts Town Hall Meeting
Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., and the New York Medical College/Touro College of Dental Medicine leadership presented a virtual town hall meeting on August 12. The State of the College update covered an array of topics including the latest information on the pandemic, plans for a virtual Founder's Dinner, the health attestation process, campus-wide diversity and inclusion initiatives and a look at the incoming classes of the School of Medicine, Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Health Sciences and Practice and the Touro College of Dental Medicine. George W. Contreras, M.E.P., M.P.H., M.S., CEM, FAcEM, right, assistant director of the Center for Disaster Medicine and assistant professor in the Institute of Public Health, was honored with a special award from the Consul General of Ecuador in New Jersey, the Ecuadorian Alliance of Passaic and the Mayor of the City of Passaic, as part of the Ecuadorian Independence Day ceremony on August 9. He was recognized for his tireless and ongoing efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic on the frontlines as a paramedic and in the virtual classroom as a professor. He was joined by, from left, Passaic Mayor Hector C. Lora, and Consul General of Ecuador in New Jersey Alfonso Morales.

Adam D. Hammerman, M.B.A., vice president and chief financial officer, was honored by Westchester Magazine with a 2020 Healthcare Heroes Award at a virtual celebration on August 5. He was recognized for his volunteer work as a critical care emergency medical technician with Hatzalah Ambulance Corps.

The ability to find one's voice through written words can be profoundly therapeutic and empowering. This workshop teaches the art of op-ed and personal essay writing as an avenue for NYMC students to find their voice, instigate dialogue, inform, influence and persuade. This workshop will provide a basic understanding of the recipe for a good op-ed.
