NYMC is Proud to Share Previews and Progress
NYMC welcomed a contingent of Westchester leaders and government officials to campus on August 17 for a midday tour to highlight the growth at BioInc@NYMC and give a sneak preview of the renovations at the recently-opened Touro College of Dental Medicine (TCDM) at New York Medical College located at 19 Skyline Drive. The tour included an opportunity to meet with current BioInc clients and a visit to the 112-seat dental simulation lab currently under construction. View the photo gallery here.

BioInc@NYMC Welcomes Newest Client Sapience Therapeutics Inc.
Sapience Therapeutics, Inc., a preclinical-stage biotechnology company focused on advancing novel therapeutics for major unmet medical needs, is the newest client of BioInc@NYMC, the Hudson Valley's only biotechnology incubator co-located within a health sciences college campus with a mission of finding new ways to prevent and treat human disease and disability. Sapience's drug development program involves translating science into novel therapies and includes targeting a protein that promotes the growth of numerous types of tumors, including glioblastoma, the most severe and deadly form of brain cancer.

NYMC Shows Support for the Missing Type Campaign
What's in a letter? A lot if one of those letters is A, B or O. You may have noticed those letters have gone missing from the NYMC sign in front of Sunshine Cottage. The letters, A, B and O, have been removed to show support for the
Missing Type Campaign, launched to spread awareness about the importance of donating blood. Currently there is an emergency blood shortage in New York and in the past decade, there has been a 40% drop in blood donors resulting in a profound shortage of blood in the world and putting thousands of lives at risk. You can show your support for the Missing Type Campaign by removing the letters A, B and O from signage, signatures, postings, and publications to highlight the need for new blood donors and you can register for the NYMC blood drive on Tuesday, September 6 in the BSB. Walk-ins are welcome or you can call the New York Blood Center at 1-800-933-BLOOD (2556) to schedule an appointment.

New Mini-Mart is Now Available in Skyline Drive
 A new mini-mart machine is now available on the ground floor behind the elevator bank in Skyline Drive and offers a selection of entrees, salads and wraps. The Glatt Kosher selections are prepared daily by Doc's Café and include vegetarian options, yogurt, fruit and burgers, hot dog and chicken tender combinations. A menu and a list of ingredients are posted next to the machine.
Mini-Mart Operating Instructions
- Swipe your credit card on the left side of the machine.
- Open door when instructed.
- Remove product(s) you wish to purchase.
- Close door after selection is made.
- Once the door closes, ALL sales are final.
- If an item is removed for viewing and NOT placed back in its original location, you will be charged. The machine recognizes a sale by weight and any item not placed back in its original location will be recognized as a sale.

Felipe C. Cabello, M.D., professor of microbiology and immunology, was invited by the Division of Microbiology and Biotechnology, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry at the University of Helsinki, Finland, to serve as an opponent for a Ph.D. dissertation examination on antibiotic resistance genes and mobile genetic elements in Baltic marine sediments impacted by aquaculture this past June. The opponent is an honorific and traditional position in Finnish and other Nordic universities whose responsibility is to read the dissertation and extensively question the Ph.D. candidate at a public examination and ceremony that usually lasts two hours or more. While in Helsinki, Dr. Cabello presented two invited lectures on two different aspects of his research. He participated in a symposium at the University of Helsinki on Antimicrobial Resistance and the Aquatic Environment with a talk, "Antimicrobials and aquaculture: a public health issue?" The second lecture "
Borrelia burgdorferi enzootic cycle: the role of the stringent response in its persistence," was presented at the University of Helsinki Department of Bacteriology and Immunology of the Faculty of Medicine's Haartman Institute.

Camille A. Clare M.D., M.P.H., center, interim associate dean of diversity and inclusion for the School of Medicine and associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology, received the National Medical Association (NMA) Scroll of Merit Award, the organization's highest award. The award was presented at the opening ceremony of the NMA 114
th
Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly in Los Angeles on July 30. The NMA is the largest and oldest national organization representing African American physicians and their patients in the United States. Dr. Clare is pictured with Edith Mitchell, M.D., the 116th president of the NMA and Garfield Clunie, M.D., chairman of the Board of Trustees of the NMA.

 Michael H. Gewitz, M.D., professor of pediatrics and vice chairman of the Department of Pediatrics, was invited to present the First Annual Leonard Steinfeld Research Symposium, sponsored by the Pediatric Cardiology Society of Greater New York, held at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai on May 18. Dr. Gewitz presented, "Researching the Researchers: Insights into the Development of Clinical Practice Guidelines in Pediatric Cardiology."

Stuart A. Newman, Ph.D.,
professor of cell biology and anatomy, co-organized a symposium on July 29 on "The vertebrate limb as an evolving dynamical system" at the meeting of the European Society for Evolutionary Developmental Biology in Uppsala, Sweden.
