Michelle Novotny, M.A., Is Named Associate Dean for Admissions and Enrollment Management in the School of Health Sciences and Practice
 Michelle Novotny, M.A., has joined the New York Medical College (NYMC) community in the role of associate dean for admissions and enrollment management in the School of Health Sciences and Practice. She brings more than 20 years of experience in college and university enrollment with expertise in project management, event planning, marketing and communications, and she has worked extensively with adult learners and international students. She comes to NYMC from the College of New Rochelle, where she served as associate vice president for enrollment management, responsible for developing and coordinating school-wide enrollment management processes that addressed the recruitment and enrollment of students for each the college's four schools and five campuses.

Anthony M. Sozzo, M.A., M.S.Ed., Reprises Role as NASFAA Graduate/Professional Caucus Chair
 Longtime student advocate and financial aid counseling veteran, Anthony M. Sozzo, M.A., M.S.Ed., associate dean for student affairs and director of student activities and student financial planning, has been named graduate/professional caucus chair of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA), a nonprofit membership organization that represents more than 22,000 financial aid professionals at nearly 3,000 colleges, universities, and career schools across the United States. It is the only national association with a primary focus on student aid legislation, regulatory analysis, and training for financial aid administrators. Mr. Sozzo was appointed for a one-year term that began on July 1 and comes at a particular turbulent time in the world of financial aid. He was selected to provide leadership to the graduate and professional community and act as a liaison between the graduate/professional community and NASFAA, a role he successfully fulfilled in 2012-2013.

HSL Hosts "Fire and Freedom: Food and Enslavement in Early America" Exhibit
 "Fire and Freedom: Food and Enslavement in Early America" is the latest National Library of Medicine exhibit being hosted by the Health Sciences Library. A special presentation by NYMC resident historian Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A.
, chancellor and chief executive officer, was held on August 21. The exhibit highlights how meals can reveal how power was exchanged between and among different peoples, races, genders, and classes during the early colonial era. Dr. Halperin discussed the forms of evidence of the diets of slaves including ships' manifests, advertisements for runaway slaves, written memoirs of whites and African-Americans, bones uncovered underground and archeological flora and fauna data. The exhibition was developed and produced by the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health with research assistance provided by staff at The Washington Library at George Washington's Mount Vernon. The exhibit is now on display in the lobby of the School of Health Sciences and Practice lobby.

NYMC Hosts Fourth Annual East-West Integrative Medical Symposium for Immunology and Wellness
 More than 100 attendees from across the U.S. and as far away as the United Kingdom and China, gathered at New York Medical College (NYMC) for the Fourth "East-West Integrative Medical Symposium for Immunology and Wellness-Clinical Practice, Science and Technology" on July 15, organized and hosted by the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. The forum, with a simultaneous English-to-Chinese translation available for guests, discussed scientific advances in the area of allergies and wellness and sought to bridge international collaborations for research and education, as well as offer clinical applications of integrative models of treatment for allergic disorders and for promoting wellness.

Guiqing (Hank) Wang, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of pathology and research assistant professor of microbiology and immunology, presented "Real-Time Whole-Genome Sequencing of MDROs for Hospital Antimicrobial Stewardship and Infection Control" at the Next Generation Dx Summit - Cambridge Healthtech Institute's Tenth Annual Molecular Diagnostics for Infectious Disease, Novel Technologies and Advances to Improve Clinical Outcomes, held August 20 - 24, in Washington, D.C.

David Markenson, M.D., M.B.A., medical director and interim director of the Center for Disaster Medicine, was named to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) Committee. The new CLER program is designed to provide U.S. teaching hospitals, medical centers, health systems, and other clinical settings affiliated with ACGME-accredited institutions with periodic feedback that addresses six focus areas: patient safety; health care quality; care transitions; supervision; well-being; and professionalism. Feedback provided by the CLER Program is designed to improve how clinical sites engage resident and fellow physicians in learning to provide safe, high quality patient care.

 Chiso Nwokokafor, left, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Esther L. Sabban, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, attended the Symposium "Catecholamine Research: The Enduring Impact of Irv Kopin" on July 26 at the Natcher Conference Center of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. Mr. Nwokafor received a travel stipend to attend and presented a poster "Locus Coeruleus Response in Rodent PTSD Model and Reversal of Hyperarousal Symptoms with Intranasal Neuropeptide Y."
