David S. Markenson, M.D., M.B.A.,
has been
re-
appointed
director of the Center for Disaster Medicine
(CDM)
at N
ew York Medical College (NYMC).
He has
served as the Center's interim director since May of 2018
and medical director
since May 2013
. Dr. Markenson's
ties to the
CDM
began
when he co
-
founded the C
enter
in 2005
before relocating to
Sky Ridge Medical Center
in Colorado
as chief medical officer.
The internationally recognized expert in disaster and emergency medicine is
once again adopting the
role
as director of the
CDM
at NYMC
.

Hales Lobby Gets a Makeover
At any given moment of the day, pass through the Hales Lobby in the Basic Sciences Building and you'll likely find it filled with students enjoying the newly renovated space-studying, socializing or just relaxing. The freshly painted and carpeted space has been reconfigured to accomodate seating for 80 with a combination of couches, ottomans, tables and chairs including high-tops and seating booths. In addition, the space was renovated to include 24 new electrical outlets and 20 USB outlets. The NYMC community can also utilize two new standalone charging stations with the capacity to charge eight phones each-one in the Hales Lobby and the other in the Health Sciences Library.

Center for Disaster Medicine Provides Mass Casualty Triage Training to NYU Langone
The Center for Disaster Medicine took its expertise on the road and gave an eight-hour Principles and Application of Mass Causality course to emergency department clinicians and other physicians at New York University (NYU) Langone Hospital-Brooklyn on July 22. The course is designed to refresh the knowledge of medical professionals who would be responsible for the initial triage of victims following a disaster such as a mass shooting.

Felipe C. Cabello, M.D., professor emeritus of microbiology and immunology, gave an invited talk on July 10, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, at the Aqua 2019 meeting of Ecuador's National Aquaculture Chamber. Ecuador exports nearly 90,000 tons of shrimp a year to the United States (roughly 8,000 metric tons), and there is concern in the industry regarding employment of antimicrobials in this activity. Dr. Cabello discussed his work with Henry P. Godfrey, M.D., Ph.D., professor of pathology, and their collaborators' on antimicrobial use in the aquacultural environment in the context of the One Health paradigm and their relationship to the evolution of antimicrobial resistance.

Marina K. Holz, Ph.D., dean of the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences, was appointed to serve as a member of the National Institutes of Health Center for Scientific Review Cancer Prevention Study Section, for a four-year term beginning in July. Members are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline as evidenced by the quality of research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals and other significant scientific activities, achievements and honors.

Matthew McIntyre, School of Medicine Class of 2020, was awarded a prestigious 2019 Alpha Omega Alpha Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship. He will conduct research, "The Impact of Multi-System Abnormalities on Injury Outcomes in Patients Presenting to the Emergency Department with Alcohol Intoxication" under the mentorship of Rifat Latifi, M.D., FACS, FICS, professor and chair of the Department of Surgery.
