NYMC Celebrates Wellness Week
|
Students were reminded about the importance of self care during Wellness Week, September 21-25, presented by the Wellness Committee of the Student Senate and the Office of Student Mental Health and Wellness Services. The week's events included an old-fashioned ice cream social sponsored by the Gold Humanism Honor Society and an outdoor movie screening. The highlight of the week was a visit by certified therapy dogs and volunteers from the H.E.A.R.T. Organization. Approximately 60-80 students received plenty of attention from six canine/volunteer teams at the lunch hour event coordinated by Reon Baird-Feldman, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and co-director of Student Mental Health and Wellness Services.

NYMC Welcomes Claudette Killian, M.B.A., as Purchasing Specialist
|
Claudette Killian, M.B.A.,
has been named purchasing specialist, providing leadership and support in all aspects of purchasing and procurement for New York Medical College. Ms. Killian joins NYMC from SUNY Maritime College, where she served as purchasing agent since 2012. In her new role, Ms. Killian will be responsible for expanding the use of Coupa internally as well as for financial and contract management and vendor relations. Ms. Killian will be instrumental in developing, implementing and optimizing purchasing processes at NYMC to help the College increase quality while managing costs. Ms. Killian earned her B.S. in Maritime Studies at SUNY Maritime College and her M.B.A. at Southern New Hampshire University. She reports to Michael Rogovin, vice president of operations, with a dotted line relationship to Wanda Hernandez, director of purchasing at Touro College and University System.

Be Part of the Farm-to-Campus Initiative
|
Members of the NYMC community are invited to sign up for weekly fresh food delivered right to campus from the Good Food Farmers Network. Organic vegetables and fruit, grass-fed meats, pastured poultry and eggs and other specialty items are available. After 35 people enroll, farmers will begin their weekly deliveries to the front of the Medical Education Center on Wednesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. You may sign up week to week and are not locked into a contract or extended timeframe. The Good Food Farmers Network is a farmer-owned, collaborative effort among regional farms working to support sustainable agriculture and beginning farmers. Their fresh food is grown and harvested with great care, and produced without pesticides,synthetic fertilizers, or genetically-modified organisms, and with the highest degree of animal welfare and environmental stewardship. Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.B.A.,
dean of the School of Health Sciences and Practice and
vice president for governm
ent affairs, was honored with a City & State Reports' Corporate Social Responsibility Award for the health care, hospitals and pharmaceuticals industries. He received the Chairman's Award at a ceremony on September 17 at Hunter College highlighting socially responsible leaders across New York industry sectors in partnership with City University of New York and Hunter College.
 Stuart A. Newman, Ph.D., professor of cell biology and anatomy, was a visiting professor at the Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), in Mexico City, from September 7 - 11. While at UNAM, Dr. Newman presented a lecture on "Physico-genetic Processes of Animal Development and Evolution" at the Center for Complexity Sciences, and one on "Challenges to the Darwinian Synthesis from Evolutionary Developmental Biology" at the Ecology Institute. He also conducted two half-day multidisciplinary workshops on morphogenesis in the biology graduate program at UNAM.

obert A. Ollar, Ph.D.,
assistant professor of neurology, was a guest lecturer at the
RK Birla Cancer Center, SMS Medical College Hospital, in Jaipur, India, on September 23. He presented "Application of MicroRNAs in the Early Detection of Pancreatic Cancer, and for Monitoring Efficacy of Therapeutic and Surgical Regimens in Treatment of the Disease."

The site includes updated policies and forms for promotion and tenure from the Tenure, Appointments and Promotion (TAP) Committee. An important change is that there is now a deadline for promotion and tenure applications for each year. This year the deadline is October 1 although in following years it will be September 15. This deadline applies only to promotion and tenure applications and not to new faculty appointments. There is also a new Educator track in addition to the Investigator, Research, Clinical and Voluntary tracks.
