NYMC and Westchester DOH Collaborate to Combat Opioid Overdoses
 The School of Medicine Class of 2020 is fulfilling NYMC's commitment to the White House National Opioid Education Campaign and all members will be certified in the administration of Nalaxone (Narcan) to help fight the epidemic of opioid and heroin overdoses by the end of the month. In collaboration with the Westchester County Department of Health, the students are being trained to recognize the signs and symptoms of an opioid or heroin overdose and learn how to administer Narcan. When administered properly, the nasal spray Narcan restores breathing that has been dangerously slowed by an overdose of an opioid or heroin. Each student will be certified for two years to administer Narcan in New York State and receive a free kit with a needleless syringe and two doses of Naloxone, courtesy of the Westchester County Department of Health.  The Department of Environment, Health and Safety has been renamed the Department of Energy, Environment, Health and Safety (EEHS) to reflect their responsibility of handling all issues regarding energy usage, procurement and sustainability. The Department, led by Sarah Cottet, director of Energy, Environment, Health and Safety and Strategic Projects, delivers a broad range of services to promote the protection of the NYMC community and supports NYMC's core mission of teaching, research, and community stewardship. Ms. Cottet has also expanded her role and now serves as director of EEHS for Touro.
Shoshana Yehuda, director of emergency preparedness at Touro, has expanded her role and now applies her expertise in emergency management and planning at NYMC. She is working with Michael Rogovin, J.D., vice president of operations, to develop a comprehensive emergency plan and business continuity initiative.

Gerald F. Culliton, M.P.A., right, senior lecturer in the Department of Health Policy and Management in School of Health Sciences and Practice and director of VA Connecticut Healthcare System, received the first annual Integrity Award at the Connecticut Association of Healthcare Executives Annual Meeting held on June 28 in Plantsville, Conn. The Integrity Award, the Association's highest honor, is presented annually to the health care executive who has shown an unwavering commitment to "doing what is right" and for meaningfully influencing the culture of his or her organization by ethically resolving difficult dilemmas or by consistently advocating and demonstrating high ethical conduct in all they do. Gary Havican, M.B.A., president of the Connecticut Association of Healthcare Executives, presented the award to Mr. Culliton.

Esther L. Sabban, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, was invited to present a talk at the Military Health System Research Symposium held August 15-18 in Kissimmee, Fla. She presented "Potential of Intranasal Neuropeptide Y and/or Melanocortin 4 Receptor Antagonists for Preventing or Treating PTSD."
