7 Dana Road Gets the Gold
|
NYMC is proud to announce that 7 Dana Road has achieved LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification at the gold level, recognizing the positive environmental impact of the building's design, construction, maintenance and operation. In achieving this accomplishment, 7 Dana Road - which houses the Clinical Skills and Disaster Medicine Training Center and BioInc@NYMC - was awarded five out of five possible innovation points, rewarding the following efforts: green building education; green cleaning programs; integrated pest management; low-mercury lighting; and exemplary performance on use of ENERGYSTAR-rated equipment. Medical Students Share Their Summer Service Learning Experiences
|
Ten second-year medical students shared their summer service learning experiences at an exhibition presented by the Department of Family and Community Medicine on September 2. The students participated in four to six week service learning programs over the summer at 6 community sites, including the American Diabetes Association, the Westchester County Department of Health, the NYMC Hoboken University Medical Centers Family Medicine Residency Program, the White Plains Youth Bureau, the Neighborhood Health Center of the Hoboken University Medical Center and the Family Medicine Center of the Saint Joseph's Hospital in Yonkers, N.Y. NYMC Joins the Good Food Farmers Network
|
Members of the NYMC community are invited to join the Good Food Farmers Network and sign up for weekly fresh produce delivered right to campus. Organic vegetables and fruit, grass-fed meats, pastured poultry and eggs and other specialty items are available. After 35 people sign up, farmers will begin their weekly deliveries to the front of the Medical Education Center on Wednesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. You may sign up week to week and are not locked into a contract or extended timeframe. The Good Food Farmers Network is a farmer-owned, collaborative effort among regional farms working to support sustainable agriculture and beginning farmers. Their fresh food is grown and harvested with great care, and produced without pesticides,synthetic fertilizers, or genetically-modified organisms, and with the highest degree of animal welfare and environmental stewardship. Save the Date for the 2015 Westchester County Heart Walk
|
Join the NYMC community at the American Heart Association's 2015 Westchester County Heart Walk on Sunday, October 4. The three-mile walk at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla, N.Y., kicks off with registration at 9:00 a.m. and a 10:00 a.m. walk start. There is no cost to walk and participants who raise $25.00 or more will be given a NYMC team shirt. Physical therapy students from the School of Health Sciences and Practice will be on hand to lead warm-up exercises, offer screenings and cheer on walkers as they cross the finish line. The goal in Westchester is to raise $390,000 while promoting physical activity and healthy living and raising awareness about heart disease. The NYMC team hopes to raise $12,000. Funds will be used locally for research, prevention programs and informational awareness campaigns and a portion will support the College's own investigations on heart disease prevention and treatment. Howard Zucker, M.D., J.D., right, in Albany on September 1, on recent achievements in reducing rates of childhood asthma and other environmentally-triggered illnesses. Working last year under a recent State grant, NYMC's Children's Environmental Health Center of the Hudson Valley performed more than 100 individualized consultations for families faced with environmental issues, delivered 24 continuing education programs for health care providers throughout the region, and sponsored preceptorships for several local physicians who learned about advances in asthma management in primary care settings. The briefing was held with principals from several other facilities, representing the statewide network of environmental health centers. The Center, directed by Allen J. Dozor, M.D., professor of pediatrics and clinical public health, and chief, pediatric pulmonology, allergy & sleep medicine, is a joint venture of NYMC and the physicians at the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital at Westchester Medical Center, with nine outreach offices throughout the Hudson Valley.
