As we gathered in worship on Pentecost Sunday, we were reminded that the Holy Spirit still calls people to faith in Jesus Christ through the Gospel. In Acts 2, people from many nations heard the mighty works of God proclaimed in their own language. The Church was not built on human creativity or power, but on Christ crucified and risen for sinners and the Spirit working through His Word.

Then came Memorial Day, when we pause to remember those who gave their lives in service to others. Their sacrifice reminds us that freedom is costly. As Christians, we also remember the greater sacrifice of Jesus, who laid down His life for the world and rose again so that we might have eternal life.

In uncertain and divided times, Pentecost reminds us that the Spirit still gathers and sanctifies the Church. Memorial Day reminds us to live in gratitude and humility. Together, they call us to walk faithfully, serve boldly, and remain anchored in Christ, for our families, communities and the generations to come.

A Cold Face for a Good Cause!

Pastor James Cleland (Shepherd of the Sierra, Carson City, NV) was the auctioneer for the Sierra Lutheran High School annual auction. At the end of the night, he made the comment that the only thing we had left to auction off was the beard on his face… and people got excited!

Pastor Cleland said that he would shave it off at a pep rally if 5 people would donate $1,000 each. The goal was reached in 10 seconds, with an extra $1,000 from the one to shave it off! $6,000 raised for scholarships - worth the cold face!

School Spotlight: Zion Lutheran School

Zion Lutheran Church has been a part of the Richmond District of San Francisco since 1905, with Zion Lutheran School opening in 1947. The school has an enrollment of 155 students in kindergarten through 8th grade served by 22 faithful faculty and staff members. The principal, Jenn Lee, a legacy student, teacher and principal, has been at Zion since 2004 and principal since 2016.

Zion continues to have a strong academic program, and, most importantly, they help their students become strong Christians who live, lead, love, and learn! Recently, Zion's pastor, Lenny Szeto, baptized four students. May God continue to bless their ministry!
