For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” - Luke 14:11

In Luke 14:1–14, Jesus challenges both the guests and the host at a dinner party. To the guests, He speaks about humility. To the host, He encourages generosity—inviting those who cannot repay. His message flips the values of the world upside down: greatness is found in serving, not striving; in welcoming the overlooked, not impressing
the powerful.

This week we observe National Thoughtful Day (August 28), a timely reminder to consider how we treat others—especially those who often go unnoticed. In a culture that elevates status, Jesus invites us to take the low place and extend grace.

As we go about our week, may we reflect Christ’s heart by practicing humility and offering hospitality—not for recognition but to reflect the love of the One who welcomed us first.

SHARE YOUR STORY!

Do you have a story to tell about kingdom impact or an upcoming event beneficial to the CNH District?

While your congregation is already bringing the light of Christ into your local community (and we praise God for that!), something remarkable happens when we unite as one Church body. Our collective efforts, relationships, and resources become a powerful movement—one that reflects Jesus’ heart for the hurting, the isolated, and the unreached.

Best Practices: Church and School Staff Retreats

For some churches with schools, the start of another school year is a great time for the staff to get away and prepare for the upcoming year. Although there are many ways to do this, here is one example of how this is done.

Regardless of how or when a retreat is done, retreats can be a powerful way to bring a staff together to focus on growing closer together for the purpose of team ministry. Send us your retreat stories and we may include it in a future InTouch article as well. Click here to submit them.

Know a College Student? Don't Forget Campus Ministry!

Don't let the college student in your congregation be one of the estimated 70% who loses their faith while in college. Whether it's a freshman heading out to their first year of college or an upperclassmen returning to campus, you can help make sure they're being fed spiritually and growing in faith by connecting them with a local Lutheran church or LCMS U campus ministry chapter near their school. Just use the LCMS Locator or find a dedicated campus ministry with the LCMS U chapter locator.

And if you know a college student attending Chico State University or Butte College in Oroville, please contact Pastor Brennan DeForest at pastorbd4est@gmail.com or his cell phone 801-910-6937

College is tough. Jesus said, "take my yoke upon you and learn from me... and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
