“I Am the Resurrection and the Life”

In John 11:1-45 (46 - 53), Jesus stands at the tomb of His friend Lazarus. Grief is real here - tears are shed, questions are asked, and death feels final. Yet into that sorrow Jesus speaks one of the clearest promises in all of Scripture: “I am the resurrection and the life.” He does not offer an explanation for suffering; He offers Himself. And then, with a word, He calls Lazarus out of the grave, revealing that even death answers to Him.

This powerful Gospel meets us during a week when the secular calendar also holds moments of reflection and transition. March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day, often marked by celebration, but rooted in a story of faith, endurance, and Gospel witness. March 20 brings the Spring Equinox, when daylight and darkness stand in balance and creation begins to tilt unmistakably toward new life.

All of these moments echo the tension in John 11: life and death, sorrow and hope, waiting and renewal. Lent leads us straight into this tension, refusing easy optimism while proclaiming a deeper truth. Jesus enters our grief, stands beside our tombs, and speaks life where we see none.

As Holy Week approaches, this Gospel steadies us. The resurrection Jesus promises is not abstract or distant. It is personal, and certain - because the One who weeps with us is also the One who conquers the grave.

Staying Connected:
How Zion is Using Technology to Bridge Communities

What happens when a church faces shrinking congregations, retiring pastors, and financial strain - yet refuses to give up? For Zion, the answer was to think bigger. Instead of fading quietly or spreading one pastor too thin, Zion brought multiple congregations together under a shared identity, spanning communities from Lodi to Valley Springs to Jackson and beyond.

Now under Pastor Jason Weber, the ministry is using technology not just to survive, but to genuinely thrive. Read the full story (click here) to see how Zion is proving that a church doesn't have to be in one place to be one church.
