Marked By Mercy: Lent Begins

On Ash Wednesday, February 18, the Church enters the season of Lent. With ashes traced in the sign of the cross, we hear words both sobering and hopeful: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” or “Repent and believe the Gospel.” Lent begins not with self-improvement plans or spiritual resolutions, but with honesty - about our sin, our mortality, and our deep need for Christ.

This holy season begins alongside an interesting mix of secular rhythms. February 17 is Mardi Gras, a day traditionally marked by celebration and excess before restraint. Later in the week, World Day of Social Justice (Feb 20) calls attention to brokenness in our communities and the longing for what is right. Washington’s Birthday (Feb 22) invites reflection on leadership, legacy, and the weight of responsibility. Together, these moments echo the human tension Lent names so clearly: our desire to celebrate, our awareness of injustice, and our need for guidance.

Lent does not call us away from the world, but deeper into the truth about ourselves and our Savior. We fast, pray, and repent - not to earn God’s favor, but because Christ has already secured it at the cross. Marked with ashes, we begin this journey trusting that repentance leads not to despair, but to life, forgiveness, and the sure hope of Easter that is already on the way.
