Holocaust Survivor and Former Sunshine Cottage TB Resident Visits NYMC
Children once hospitalized at Sunshine Cottage are elderly now, but every now and then one returns for a visit. One such alumna is Inge Auerbacher, right who stayed at Sunshine Cottage from 1946 to 1948. She and her family had recently moved to the United States after surviving three years in a concentration camp. Within a year of their move to Rye, New York, 11-year-old Auerbacher was diagnosed with tuberculosis and hospitalized at Sunshine Cottage, a children's tuberculosis hospital which opened in 1931. On April 23, Auerbacher returned to Sunshine for a special visit, where she spoke with students and Neil W. Schluger, M.D., center, SOM dean and professor of medicine, about her experiences during the Holocaust—including being forced to wear the yellow Star of David to publicly identify herselves as Jewish—and her memories of being treated for tuberculosis at Sunshine. Auerbacher authored four books, including Beyond the Yellow Star to America, which chronicles her experiences at Sunshine. She was awarded the 1999 Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
