SOM Welcomes Class of 2030
The School of Medicine marked the start of a new academic year by welcoming the Class of 2030. Throughout orientation week, incoming students connected with classmates, faculty, and staff while becoming familiar with the resources, support services, and traditions that will guide them throughout their medical education. The week's festivities concluded with the annual dean's barbecue on the Alumni House lawn, where students and their families gathered to celebrate the beginning of this exciting journey.

CSSC Brings Medicine to Life for High Schoolers
Nearly 500 high school students from across the country visited the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center (CSSC) over six days in July for a hands-on learning experience in medicine. Students learned about admissions to medical school, life as a medical student, and career specialties and participated in a diagnostic escape room, examined head, eyes, ears, nose, and throat task trainers, had encounters with standardized patients, and participated in simulations with manikins. "One of the most rewarding aspects of hosting these students is seeing their excitement grow as they step into the role of a future health care professional. Through hands-on simulation and interactive learning, they gain a realistic understanding of medicine while building confidence, curiosity, and a deeper appreciation for the many career paths available in health care," said Katharine Yamulla, M.H.E.A., CHSE, assistant dean of clinical skills education and assessment and director of the CSSC. "Opening our doors to nearly 500 aspiring health professionals was an incredible opportunity to showcase the innovative learning environment at New York Medical College."

Opening Doors to Medicine—Earlier and Wider
The Associated Medical Schools of New York (AMSNY)-SOM Linkage Program has made all the difference in the medical education of many. With the goal of increasing underrepresented populations in the medical field, the AMSNY-SOM Linkage Program is one of many programs at NYMC that works to diminish disparities in health care.

Exchange Transfusion Linked to Better Outcomes in Severe Babesiosis
Babesiosis, a tick-borne disease seen worldwide, has increased sharply in recent years, especially across the northeastern United States. For patients with severe illness, red blood cell exchange transfusion is commonly used—but evidence of its clinical benefit has been limited. A new study by a national group of researchers, including Marc El Khoury, M.D., associate professor of medicine, now provides that evidence, reporting a significant benefit in findings published in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Tracking, Tracing, and Following the Evidence Is All in a Day’s Work for Andrew R. Guajardo, M.D. '13
For forensic pathologist Andrew R. Guajardo, M.D. '13, the biggest misconception about his field is that it’s solitary or antisocial. As the chief medical examiner of Dutchess County in the Hudson Valley, Dr. Guajardo said he interacts with everyone—his patients’ families and partners, their former physicians, law enforcement officers conducting investigations, and attorneys involved in prosecuting crime or settling civil matters.
