GSBMS Welcomes a New Cohort of Students
Excitement buzzed through The Norman E. Alexander Family M Foundation Medical Education Center Plaza on August 7, as a new cohort of GSBMS students stepped onto campus, ready to embark on their academic journey. With backpacks slung over shoulders and curiosity in the air, the first days of the 2025–2026 academic year were filled with fresh faces, warm welcomes, and the promise of discovery. Whether finding their way to the labs or meeting future collaborators, students wasted no time beginning to make GSBMS their home.

Study Calls for Nuanced Approach to Stroke Care in Sexual and Gender Diverse Patients
Health disparities and unique stressors may shape stroke risk and other cerebrovascular conditions among sexual and gender diverse individuals—those who identify as transgender, nonbinary, or intersex—according to a review study conducted by NYMC faculty and students, including Alice Catalano, SOM Class of 2027, and published in Neurology Clinical Practice.

NYMC and TU Host “Ninety Minutes: The Medical Magazine of the Web”
NYMC and TU presented “Ninety Minutes: The Medical Magazine of the Web,” on August 7. Moderated by Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer, the dynamic 90-minute webinar featured expert faculty panel discussions on timely topics including cancer screenings for individuals over 70, the importance of hearing screenings as part of routine health care, and essential doctor visits and vaccinations for college-bound students. The session concluded with a thoughtful Q&A, engaging attendees in deeper discussion around these critical areas of preventive medicine.

Mitchell S. Cairo, M.D., professor of pediatrics, cell biology and anatomy, medicine, and of pathology, microbiology, and immunology, and vice chair of pediatrics, was the keynote speaker at the 8th GoBroad Medical Annual Meeting in Beijing, China, on July 12. He presented his research on "Targeted Immunotherapy in the Treatment of Childhood, Adolescent and Young Adult Hodgkin Lymphoma and Mature B-Cell Lymphoma."

Tai M. Lee Jr., NRP, EMT-T, CIC/RF, MEP, deputy director of the Center for Disaster Medicine, was appointed to the National Registry of EMTs Continued Competency Focus Group. NREMT is the national licensing entity for EMS providers.

Dana Mordue, Ph.D., vice chancellor for accreditation and student support and associate professor of pathology, microbiology and immunology, served as acting chair of a National Institutes of Health special emphasis review panel for R01s and R21s on July 25, focused on the complex life cycles of vector-borne and zoonotic pathogens. The review panel covered all aspects of pathogen transmission, from basic biology to community-level studies, including disease control strategies for bacteria, viruses, fungi, helminths, and other parasites.

Esther L. Sabban, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and molecular biology and the Sidney E. Frank Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, was an invited speaker at the 14th International NPY-PYY-PP and 4th International Galanin and related Peptides Research Conference in Innsbruck, Austria, July 14-17. She presented "Intranasal Neuropeptide Y as a Potential Therapeutic for Depressive Behavior in the Rodent Single prolonged Stress Model in Females" in the symposium on intranasal application of peptides.

Reminder to investigators that all National Institutes of Health review sections follow the new Simplified Review Framework. The Simplified Review Framework prioritizes the review score for Factor 1: the perceived importance of the research. In the new Simplified Review Framework the score for Factor 1 sets a limit for the best possible overall score for the grant. Scores for Factor 2 (rigor and feasibility of the scientific approach) and Factor 3 (expertise and resources) can reinforce the score for Factor 1 (Significance) or worsen it but not improve the overall score.
