SOM Class of 2025 Celebrates Milestone as Promising Medical Professionals during White Coat Ceremony
Members of the SOM Class of 2025 gathered on campus on a beautiful summer afternoon, to celebrate an important milestone on their journey to becoming physicians when they officially donned their white coats for the first time during the White Coat Ceremony on August 1. Now a 25-year tradition at NYMC, the White Coat Ceremony began in 1993 at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons by Arnold P. Gold, M.D., a professor of clinical neurology and of clinical pediatrics, there, to emphasize the importance of professionalism and humanism in medicine at the beginning of medical school. SOM Students Spread Awareness of La Casita de la Salud to New Rochelle Community
The Community Outreach Committee for NYMC free student-run clinic, La Casita de la Salud, continued to fulfill the clinic's mission of expanding affordable care to those in need, as they set up a tabling event in New Rochelle, New York, to recruit new patients to the clinic on July 28. Two students, Christine Colasacco, left, and Danielle Maraia, both members of the SOM Class of 2024, increased awareness among community members about La Casita, which recently expanded to the NYMC campus at 19 Skyline Drive to provide free health and dental services to eligible individuals, in conjunction with Touro College of Dental Medicine (TCDM). SOM Students Volunteer at WMC Pop-Up COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic in Yonkers
Students in the SOM gave a helping hand to a local Westchester community, volunteering at a pop-up mobile COVID-19 vaccination clinic at Indian Assembly of God Church in Yonkers, New York, where the students helped administer vaccines and engaged the community with information about COVID-19 vaccinations. Michaela Scott, SOM Class of 2022; Julia Slyer, SOM Class of 2023; and Rachel Mund, Eseiwi Aifuwa and Parth Patel, all members of the Class of 2025; volunteered to assist with registration, outreach or administering vaccines. The clinic successfully vaccinated more than 30 individuals and educated dozens more about the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines. Read the full article on the vaccination clinic.

Michael Reilly, Dr.P.H. '10, M.P.H., Closes in on Achieving Lifelong Goal of Becoming a Physician
Like many medical students, Michael Reilly, Dr.P.H. '10, M.P.H., entered his undergraduate studies intent on becoming a physician. However, unlike many medical students, Dr. Reilly is set to graduate medical school nearly two decades after completing his undergraduate studies. It was at Northeastern University in Boston, where he became a paramedic and aspired to attend medical school until one of the nation's darkest days. September 11, 2001, changed the course of his future, launching him into the public health field and becoming a leading voice in disaster preparedness before embarking on medical school. Tolga Sursal, M.D., PGY7, left, under the mentorship of Meena Jhanwar-Uniyal, Ph.D., research associate professor of neurosurgery, was awarded the prestigious Charlie Kuntz Scholar Award at 37th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/ College of Neurological Surgeons (AANS/CNS) Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves in San Diego, California, July 28 - 31. Dr. Sursal presented his research, "Involvement of mTOR pathway modulates autophagy and immune response in recovery from spinal cord injury." The Kuntz Award, presented by the Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves (DSPN) of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), is awarded every year to neurosurgical residents or fellows who author outstanding abstracts describing a laboratory or clinical investigation in the area of spinal disorders.
