NYMC Welcomes SOM Class of 2025 During Transition Week
NYMC welcomed 211 students to the School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2025 during transition week that included move in days and a week full of presentations on professionalism, success and wellness in medical school, academic policies, the student honor code, implicit bias training, career planning and research opportunities, as well as online safety training and required certifications in infection control, HIPAA, basic life support and Narcan administration. There was also time for social activities for students to get to know one another including the Dean's Barbecue and a dinner dance party. Robin Hershkowitz, LCSW-R, Is Named Director of the Office of Student Mental Health and Wellness
Robin Hershkowitz, LCSW-R, has been named director of the Office of Student Mental Health and Wellness (SMHW) effective July 1, 2021. Ms. Hershkowitz, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, has been a clinician and educator in SMHW for the last three years providing supportive counseling and psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral intervention, crisis management, comprehensive diagnostic assessment and emergency intervention as well as consultation to faculty, medical staff and community outreach. NYMC and TCUS Host 13th COVID-19 Symposium
Variants of COVID-19 and vaccination efforts were the focus of the latest edition of the COVID-19 Symposium series, hosted by NYMC and Touro College and University System (TCUS) on July 22. The 13th COVID-19 Symposium took aim at the Delta variant-which has been detected in an increasing percentage of COVID-19 cases across the United States in recent weeks-and vaccine hesitancy. D.P.T. Student Pursues Fifth Degree and Dream of Helping Others
Oluwaseun Cole, M.P.H., a member of the D.P.T. Class of 2023, always knew he wanted to help people and has worked hard to fulfill that dream. At age 38, Mr. Cole has earned four academic degrees, and has served in the United States Navy and Air Force, all while assisting those in need along the way. Gabrielle Monge, Speech-Language Pathology Class of 2022, is one of only 14 recipients of the 2021 Students Preparing for Academic-Research Careers (SPARC) Award Program of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. She will receive a $1,000 stipend to support activities in her research mentoring and teaching plan under the mentorship of Monica McHenry, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, professor of speech-language pathology. The goal of SPARC is to foster students' interest in the pursuit of Ph.D. education and careers in academia to fill faculty and researcher vacancies in communication sciences and disorders.
