James Williams’ Journey from the NFL to NYMC
Of the 460,000 National Collegiate Athletic Association student-athletes in the U.S., fewer than two percent will go on to be professional athletes. The average medical school acceptance rate in the U.S. is five percent. These odds do not faze James Williams, SOM Class of 2026, who, before being accepted into NYMC SOM, spent two years in the NFL as an offensive lineman.

Student Housing Fitness Center Gets a Makeover
The recent renovations at the Nicholas and Liberta Testa Fitness Center in the student housing complex have significantly enhanced the workout experience. Students can enjoy upgraded equipment and flooring, a new layout and a fresh coat of paint. “We are always looking to enhance the quality of student life on campus and improve the student experience and these gym renovations will go a long way in doing that,” said Katherine Dillon Smith, M.S.W., director of student and residential life. “We appreciate everyone’s input and efforts in making the renovation a reality.” The Nicholas and Liberta Testa Fitness Center is for exclusive use by student occupants of the Grasslands residential halls. It is open 24 hours a day with access by a NYMC identification badge. Cardiovascular equipment including ellipticals, treadmills, and stationary bicycles, free weights as well as Nautilus and Universal machines are available.

Eli N. Avila, M.D., J.D., M.P.H., distinguished visiting professor in the SHSP, was elected as the 53rd president of the American College of Legal Medicine. He is the first Hispanic to hold this national role since the college’s incorporation in 1960.
