Wellness Ambassador Program Welcomes New Student Leaders
The Office of Student Mental Health and Wellness (SMHW) has expanded their Wellness Ambassador Program, welcoming 56 new wellness ambassadors. The program has 100 students, representing all graduate programs at the College. A highlight of the evening was having leadership from the graduate programs present to personally award the students their certificates. During the evening, the new ambassadors participated in a fun and interactive team-building session of Mental Health and Wellness Family Feud. The ambassadors brought their A-game, demonstrating impressive knowledge and enthusiasm throughout the night.The Wellness Ambassador Program is a critical component of student well-being on our campus. These student leaders contribute to the culture of mental health and wellness, act as a source of formal and informal peer support, and serve as a vital liaison to all services offered by the SMHW office. SMHW continues to invest significantly in training students and highly value this exceptional didactic program.

New Test Could Revolutionize Lyme Disease Diagnosis
A new serologic test for Lyme disease could significantly improve early detection and streamline the diagnostic process, according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology by co-author Gary Wormser, M.D., professor of medicine, pathology, microbiology, and immunology, and of pharmacology.

Jeanne Chamas Keeps the Department on Track and the Community in Step
Jeanne Chamas, secretary III in the Department of Physiology, keeps the department buzzing—managing calendars, supporting faculty and students, and ensuring the daily operations run smoothly. When the workday curtain falls, she keeps the rhythm going in a whole different way—instructing and choreographing country line dancing, a passion she’s been sharing with her community for the past 10 years.

Malik Bisserier, Ph.D., FAHA, assistant professor of cell biology and anatomy and of physiology, was recently recognized as a Fellow of the American Heart Association. The honor reflects his contributions to cardiovascular research, including work supported by recent grant awards such as an American Heart Association Transformational Project Award and a Career Development Award. His research program explores the epigenetic and transcriptional dysregulation that drives pulmonary vascular disease to identify molecular mechanisms that can inform therapeutic strategies. He was also appointed as an associate editor for the Journal of Translational Medicine andMolecular and Cellular Biochemistry. He will guide peer review, provide editorial decisions, and contribute to the scientific direction of each journal in areas related to pulmonary and molecular biology, and translational research.

Victor Garcia Ph.D. ’15, associate professor of pharmacology, was awarded first place for his oral presentation at the 23rd World Congress on Insulin Resistance, Diabetes & Cardiovascular Disease (WCIRDC), December 3-6, in Los Angeles, California. His talk, titled “Decoding the Peripheral Mechanism of GPR75 in Obesity and MASH: A Ca²⁺-Driven Fatty Acid Uptake Pathway and Drug Screening Platform,” highlighted innovative discoveries that advance our understanding of metabolic disease and open new avenues for therapeutic development.
