School of Medicine Class of 2024 Marks Start of Journey as Medical Professionals During White Coat Ceremony
The School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2024 marked a traditional milestone on their journey to becoming physicians at the White Coat Ceremony on November 29, when they officially donned their white coats for the first time and took an oath they had developed as a class, which included a commitment to compassionate patient care and inclusivity. Though the event this year was held mostly virtually, the SOM Office of Student Affairs went above and beyond to inject some normalcy into the event by holding ten separate, small and physically distant, gatherings during the month prior at which students could don their white coats in person and recite their oath as a group. Videos from each gathering were then combined into a virtual collage for the event, where, even with their masks on, one could see the joy and pride of students as they marked their transition from laypeople to medical professionals. School of Medicine Class of 2024 Finds Developing White Coat Ceremony Oath as a Class Particularly Meaningful
The School of Medicine (SOM) White Coat Ceremony held each year is a traditional rite of passage for the incoming first-year medical students, in which they officially don their white coats for the first time and also swear an oath as a class. As a central part of the ceremony, the oath is meant to acknowledge the student's obligation of caring for the patient. NYMC Receives New Holographic Patent Combined With 5G Wi-Fi
Alan Kadish, M.D., president of New York Medical College (NYMC) and Touro College and University System (TCUS), has announced that NYMC has been granted a new patent, #10,863,274, in holographic Wi-Fi transmission. The newly granted patent will be used in several areas of medical imaging, education and telemedicine, as well as commercial applications in industrial markets and the entertainment industry. GivingTuesday Supports Clinical Skills and Simulation Center
GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Created in 2012, the movement inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate and celebrate generosity. This year at New York Medical College (NYMC), GivingTuesday inspired donations of more than $50,000 to support the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center (CSSC)--nationally recognized for its innovative and comprehensive clinical training. The support comes at a critical time when the COVID-19 pandemic has greatly increased the demand for safe, simulated learning environments where quality patient care and professionalism are emphasized. NYMC and Touro Host Eighth Symposium on COVID-19
New York Medical College (NYMC) and the Touro College and University System (TCUS) continued its series on COVID-19 with its eighth symposium on December 3, "What have we learned? How can we use what we have learned?" A panel of faculty experts shared updates on COVID-19 including the progress made and the latest concerns including an astonishing 200,000 new cases reported in one day. "At New York Medical College and Touro College and University System, we set ourselves the task of providing up-to-date and objective information about the pandemic," said Edward C. SHSP Hosts 2020 Virtual Career Mentor Session
The Student Healthcare Executives Club (StuHE) in the School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP) hosted another successful Career Mentor Session on November 12, via Zoom. At the on-campus physically distanced command center in the cafeteria at 19 Skyline Drive, StuHE officers and volunteers seamlessly assigned students to their individual appointments in breakout rooms. The Zoom sessions were filled with intense discussions among the more than 45 students and alumni from the SHSP and ten public health professionals. NYMC Gives Thanks On Campus
For students who were unable to safely travel home for Thanksgiving this year, New York Medical College (NYMC) did its best to provide comfort to those who could not share the holiday with family and friends. Thanksgiving meals with all the fixings were provided to those remaining on campus and the Office of Student and Residential Life, Office of Student Mental Health and Wellness Services and the School of Medicine Student Senate organized a basket drive and delivered gift baskets to 56 apartments in student housing. Chris McNeill, SOM Class of 2023 and member of the Student Senate, helped spread the cheer.

Padmini Murthy, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., M.Phil., CHES, professor of public health and global health director and clinical assistant professor of family and community medicine, was the moderator for a Civil Society Unit UN Global Communications chat series #BreakTheChains Shackling of People with Pyschosocial Disabilities Worldwide organized with Human Rights Watch in observance of International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3.

The Café in the Basic Sciences Building is open. Grab-and-go salads and sandwiches and Starbucks coffee and drinks are available. NYMC apparel and merchandise is also available for sale. It is open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Seating is not available and be sure to follow the six-foot physical distancing markers when you visit.
