Department of Pediatrics Hosts Leonard J. Newman, M.D. ’70, Assistant Professor Pediatric Research Symposium
The Fourth Annual Leonard J. Newman, M.D. ’70, Assistant Professor Pediatric Research Symposium on November 19, was a day filled with oral presentations in the morning and poster presentations in the evening in the categories of basic, translational, clinical and/or quality assurance research. The symposium honors Dr. Newman who served as chair of the Department of Pediatrics for more than 30 years and aims to provide an opportunity to present new and innovative biomedical research and engage in academic discussions. Strong Showing from Alumni, Faculty, and Staff at ASHA Convention
NYMC alumni, faculty, and staff attended the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Convention in November. The annual gathering, which hosts more than 15,000 speech-language and hearing professionals, serves as a national hub for sharing research, advancing clinical practice, and fostering collaboration. This year’s three-day event was in Washington, D.C., and NYMC was well represented across sessions and presentation formats. Vikas Grover, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, left, professor and chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, co-presented an oral seminar with Stefanie Blanco, M.S. ’10, SLP.D., CCC-SLP, TSSLD, ATP, center, associate professor and director of clinical education in speech-language pathology, along with multiple poster presentations. Wendy Georgan, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, assistant professor in speech-language pathology, delivered an oral seminar as well. SLP alum Lynne MacFadyen, M.S. ’25, presented a technical session alongside her previous Westchester Medical Center SLP supervisor, Erin McMurdo, M.S., CCC-SLP, BCS-S, CBIS. Additional NYMC attendees included Rebecca Hanson, M.S., CCC-SLP, clinical instructor of speech-language pathology, alumna Marissa Stuck, M.S. ’23, CCC-SLP, and Nick Sekkas, M.S., right, director of enrollment management in the Office of SHSP Admissions, showcasing the breadth and engagement of the NYMC community at this premier professional gathering.

Bringing Motion Analysis to Life for Medical Students and Residents
Victor Santamaria, Ph.D., M.Sc., PT, PCS, second row, left, assistant professor of physical therapy and director of the motion analysis laboratory, led an interactive session for SOM students and Westchester Medical Center residents. After an introductory lecture on motion analysis and the function of a motion analysis laboratory, participants entered the lab to gain firsthand experience with Motion Capture Video (MoCA), force plate technology, and surface electromyography (sEMG) in a simplified human upright postural control model.

Pet the Stress Away Brings Puppy Comfort to Campus
To help students recharge during a busy semester, the Office of Student Mental Health and Wellness hosted Pet the Stress Away on November 24. In partnership with Paws Crossed Animal Rescue, the NYMC community enjoyed a much-needed break with some furry friends—4-month-old puppies Sherlock Bones and Benedict Cumberbark.

TCDM was thrilled to reunite with alumni at the TCDM reception on November 30 at the Greater New York Dental Meeting at the Jacob Javitz Convention Center in New York City. A great evening was had by all as alumni, faculty, and current students reconnected, laughed and shared special moments together.

Heart Health Talk with Woodland High School
The Cardiology Interest Group sent volunteers to Woodlands High School in Greenburgh, New York, to speak about heart health. Pairs of students from the SOM Classes of 2028 and 2029 presented to five high school health classes spanning the school day. They gave introductions to basic anatomy, pathology, and health maintenance, followed by a discussion about medical school and careers in STEM.

Josephine Ragaini Makes Every Note Count
Monday through Friday, Josephine Ragaini, assistant dean of financial planning and analysis in the School of Health Sciences and Practice, keeps the school’s finances in order, making sure every dollar aligns with the institution’s mission. Come the weekend, she swaps spreadsheets for song sheets—Josephine can be spotted (and heard) belting tunes from the ’80s and ’90s, along with today’s popular hits across Westchester.
