NYMC Donors Make an Impact This Giving Tuesday


The NYMC community came together to show their generosity this Giving Tuesday on December 3, to raise funds for the 5,000-square-foot expansion and renovation of NYMC’s Clinical Skills and Simulation Center (CSSC). "Giving Tuesday is a wonderful opportunity to showcase some incredible programs and centers at NYMC, including the CSSC, where students make life-changing medical decisions through hands-on experiences," said Bess J. Chazhur M.S., chief development officer and executive director of alumni relations. "It's a wonderful way to invest in our students and help them become the successful health care leaders of tomorrow. Thank you for your support."

Medical Students Inspire Youth During Black Men in White Coats Summit


SOM students and faculty made a great showing during the annual Black Men in White Coats Youth Summit, which took place on November 16 at the Marriott in Tarrytown.

29th Annual MSRF Set for December 13


Medical students are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to present and share their research findings with the College community at the 29th Annual Medical Student Research Forum on December 13. The BSB and MEC lobbies will be filled with poster presentations in the morning followed by oral presentations and a keynote address by Mitchell S. Cairo, M.D., professor of pediatrics, cell biology and anatomy, medicine, and of pathology, microbiology, and immunology, and vice chair of pediatrics, who will present “Targeted Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T and NK Cells in selected Poor Risk Pediatric Cancers.”

GSBMS Celebrates Friendsgiving


The Graduate Student Association (GSA) hosted a potluck Friendsgiving dinner for GSBMS students on November 26, in the Alumni House. Twenty guests gathered for a chance to connect with fellow graduate students over food, music, and games. “The GSA Thanksgiving Potluck was a wonderful celebration of community, gratitude, and shared traditions. It was heartwarming to see everyone come together to enjoy great food and even better company," said Rahim Hirani, M.D.-Ph.D. candidate and president of the GSA.

NYMC Alumni/Student Fall Mixer Builds Connections and Professional Insights


On December 5, the Office of Development and Alumni Relations hosted the NYMC Alumni/Student Fall Mixer, an engaging gathering with the NYMC Board of Advisors and distinguished local alumni. Attendees at the Alumni House delved into insightful discussions on medical specialties and the intricacies of residency pathways, fostering a collaborative and enriching dialogue.

Human Milk for Extreme Preemies: A Kosher Option


Maria Fareri Children's Hospital now offers a rabbinical-certified kosher donor milk option through its Liquid Gold Preemie Donor Milk Bank, led by Boriana Parvez, M.D., professor of pediatrics and founder and director of the Liquid Gold Preemie Donor Milk Bank, to support NICU families needing kosher standards.

NYMC and TU Hosts “Ninety Minutes: The Medical Magazine of the Web” 


Are common medical practices truly as beneficial as we believe? Join NYMC and TU on December 12 at 1:00 p.m. for the 31st symposium of Ninety Minutes: The Medical Magazine of the Web. The expert panel will tackle intriguing questions like: Does giving birth in a hospital trump a home birth? Are newborn checkups really necessary before heading home? Do annual chest x-rays, EKGs, or multivitamins live up to their hype? The session will conclude with a Q&A where you can get all your questions answered. CME credits available upon request.

GSA 5K Raises Awareness for Food Insecurity, Fundraising Continues


The energy was high and the spirit of giving even higher as runners gathered at Tarrytown Lakes Park on December 1 for the annual Graduate Student Association 5K Race. The event aims to support Feeding Westchester, a nonprofit addressing food insecurity in the local community. While the in-person run has concluded, the event is ongoing until December 18, where people can participate virtually to help provide meals to families in need during the holiday season.

From Pupil to Professor: Alumni Lighting the Way at NYMC 


NYMC takes pride in fostering enduring connections with its alumni, many of whom choose to return as faculty members. Among them is Ashanda M. Saint Jean, M.D. ’98, clinical associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Saint Jean shares her passion for giving back to her alma mater, dedicating herself to shaping the next generation of medical professionals through education and mentorship.

ACCOLADES

Rahim Hirani, M.D.-Ph.D. candidate and president of the Graduate Student Association, was awarded The Hope Scholarship on October 22 at the Evening of Hope Gala in Boston, Massachusetts. The scholarship is awarded to highly motivated students and fellows enrolled in high school, college, medical, graduate, or professional schools who have demonstrated an interest in biomedical, biotechnology, or other science-related fields, with direct involvement in the Biomedical Science Careers Program. Recipients are recognized for their sustained accomplishments, commitment to promoting diversity in science and medicine, and their potential for educational advancement.

Karen Murray, M.D. ’99, dean of SOM admissions and assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, was a panelist at the Westchester County Association panel discussion, All Access Healthcare - Addressing Social Determinants of Health to Achieve Health Equity, on December 5 at Iona University.

Marc K. Wallack, M.D., FACS, MAMSE, center, professor of surgery, surgery residency program director, and chair of the Department of Surgery at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan, was accepted into membership in the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators®. He was inducted on September 27, in Chicago, Illinois. The Academy's mission is to play a leadership role in advancing the science and practice of education across all surgical specialties, promoting the highest achievements in the lifetime of surgeons. Individuals are selected following a stringent peer-review process and those selected have consistently demonstrated the highest levels of leadership and excellence in surgical education.
