HeLa Conference Explores Ethics, Equity, and Innovation in a Changing Health Care Landscape
NYMC and the Westchester Medical Center Health Network co-hosted the ninth annual HeLa Ethics Research and Access Conference and Research Symposium on February 11. The event's theme, "The New Rules of Engagement," featured research that investigated the engagement in an AI-world; the risks, tradeoffs, and opportunities in health policy; finances in health care, research priorities, lung cancer screening, and navigating barriers in endometriosis care.

Kupersmith Lecture Explores Federal Tax Incentives for Living Kidney Donation: Ethical, Economic, and Halachic Considerations
The Drs. Joel and Judith R.F. Kupersmith Endowed Lectureship in Health Policy and Ethics featured the lecture, “The Ethics, Economics, and Halachah of Compensating Living Kidney Donors with Federal Tax Cuts,” on February 9 in the John W. Nevins, M.D. ’44 Auditorium. The program examined a bill currently under consideration in Congress that would grant altruistic kidney donors $50,000 in federal tax credits. Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., right, CEO and chancellor, and Rabbi Fogel, M.A., left, campus rabbi of Touro University, explored the ethical implications of the proposed legislation and the critical safeguards necessary to ensure its responsible and equitable implementation.

NYMC was well represented at the 2026 Tandem Meetings of the Tandem American Society of Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (ASTCT) and Center for International Bone Marrow Transplantation Research (CIBMTR) in Salt Lake City, Utah, on February 4 – 7. Tandem meetings are a multidisciplinary event highlighting the latest research and breakthroughs in the evolving field of hematopoietic cell transplantation, cellular therapy and gene therapy.
