During National Heart Month, the NYMC community joined Srihari S. Naidu, M.D., center back, professor of medicine, and the Cardiology Interest Group, to bring awareness for heart disease, the leading cause of death in the U.S.

Demolition of Section of Building 800 Scheduled for March
A section of building 800 in the student housing complex that was affected by a fire on June 7, 2023, is slated for demolition from March 4-8, 2024. The construction company will secure the area, and the Office of Public Safety will conduct round-the-clock patrols. All debris will be removed daily to ensure safety and cleanliness. Any questions or concerns regarding this demolition should be addressed to the Office of Student Housing and Residential Life at [email protected] or (914) 594-4832.

Stephan Mayer, M.D., professor of neurology and neurosurgery, and an international consortium of doctors are urging highly standardized and optimized workflow for treating acute ischemic stroke in a study published in Stroke.

 |  | Amy Ansehl, D.N.P., RN, MSN, FNP-BC, right, associate dean of student experience, director of applied practice experience, and associate professor of public health, and Padmini Murthy, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., FAMWA, FRSPH, left, professor of public health and director of global health, who are co-liaisons appointed by the United Nations Academic Impact Committee, represented the SDG Hub for Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being at the Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson Conference on February 10. They presented the workshop, “Health, Mental Health and Careers” for approximately 200 participants. Dr. Murthy, who is also a global lead for the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA), was joined by Mathuchena Karthikeyan, center, SOM Class of 2026, a student lead for the AMWA who volunteered her time to do community outreach and mentor the girl scouts at the event. Dr. Ansehl also represented the Children’s Environmental Health Center of the Hudson Valley (CEHCHV) as director for community outreach and education. Drs. Ansehl and Murthy have been partnering for 17 years with the Girl Scouts. The workshop was developed in collaboration with Amy Brown, M.D., M.B.E., assistant professor of pediatrics, adjunct associate professor of public, NYSCHECK lead liaison, CEHCHV, and a pediatric pulmonologist at Boston Children’s Health Physicians.

In Honor of President's Day, Connections between NYMC and the Presidency
The family physician for former president Benjamin Harrison and his family was Franklin A. Gardner, M.D. Class of 1882. He established a practice in Washington after receiving his degree from NYMC and later treated Harrison's wife Caroline for tuberculosis.
In 1965, former President Dwight D. Eisenhower had a heart attack while golfing in Augusta, Georgia. He was treated at the nearby military hospital at Fort Gordon, where Major Miriam Gately, a career member of the Army Nurse Corps and Class of 1951 graduate of the Flower-Fifth Avenue Hospital School of Nursing, led the nursing team.
