CDM Provides Hands-On Training for First Responders
The Center for Disaster Medicine conducted three days of training for first responders from throughout the Hudson Valley, Upstate New York, and Connecticut, from January 22 to 24. During the training, the Center taught a Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) course, where first responders learned how to treat trauma victims under austere conditions and a Rescue Task Force (RTF) course, which taught how law enforcement officers and pre-hospital care providers can operate as a team. Utilizing the concepts and principles of TECC and RTF, the first responders learned basic bleeding control, airway management, and victim evacuation techniques.

The Medistorian Society and Nicholas Webb, M.S.I.S., archivist and digital preservation librarian, organized The Archives Vol. 1: The Medley, the first installment of showcasing historical artifacts the College has collected for decades, on January 26.

NYMC and TU to Host “Ninety Minutes: The Medical Magazine of the Web”
NYMC and TU presented, “Ninety Minutes: The Medical Magazine of the Web,” on February 1, where faculty experts discussed RSV vaccines; prescriptions from online companies; the diagnosis of small foci of ductal-carcinoma-in-situ of the breast; sleep issues and CPAP machines. The event was hosted by Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer of NYMC, and was followed by a Q&A session moderated by Alan Kadish, M.D., president of NYMC and TU.

NYMC Starts the Year Giving Back with Food Donations
During the season of giving, the Food Insecurity Medical Outreach (FIMO) club started off the new year with a successful food drive. Multiple boxes loaded with canned goods, healthy cereals and other non-perishable food items were collected during their Winter Food Drive in January. The collections were donated to the Mount Kisco Interfaith Food Pantry, an organization that has served nearly 100,000 people during the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to provide food every week for the Westchester community. "FIMO is incredibly grateful to the members of the NYMC community who generously contributed to the Winter Food Drive. Everyone’s thoughtful donations have provided essential nourishment during the colder months and reflect the true spirit of our community. Thank you for making a meaningful difference and continuing to create positive change. The food we collected is a testament to the generosity and compassion that define the NYMC community," said Yael Weitzner, left, SOM Class of 2026, president of FIMO.

NYMC Makes a Life-Saving Impact with January Blood Drive
The NYMC community turned out on January 29 for the first blood drive of 2024. The College potentially saved up to 127 lives through blood donations. Organized by the Donate Life Club, the drive collected 49 pints of blood in the Medical Education Center lobby. "We appreciate everyone who took the time to come donate. Your actions have the potential to directly save an individual's life." said Sahdev Baweja, SOM Class of 2026, Donate Life Club co-president. This academic year, 423 lives have been potentially saved through the College's blood drives.

Padmini Murthy, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., FAMWA, FRSPH, left, professor of health policy and management in the Department of Public Health and director of global health, participated in the World Health Organization (WHO) 154th Executive Board (EB) meeting in Geneva on January 22-27. The WHO EB advises and facilitates the work of the World Health Assembly, WHO's decision-making body. She presented a statement on gender equality and universal health coverage. Dr. Murthy is pictured with Loyce Pace, M.P.H., assistant secretary for global affairs in the Department of Health and Human Services.
