New Study Reveals Obese Children Face Higher Risks in Vehicle Strikes


Obese children face a higher risk of severe and major abdominal injuries in pedestrian motor vehicle strike accidents, according to a new study by Nisha Lakhi, M.D., M.B.A., associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology.

Inaugural Drs. Joel and Judith R.F. Kupersmith Endowed Lecture Set for January 28


Joel Kupersmith, M.D. ’64, professor emeritus of medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center, will deliver the inaugural Drs. Joel and Judith R.F. Kupersmith Endowed Lectureship in Health Policy and Ethics in the NYMC SOM on Tuesday, January 28, in Cooke Auditorium at 12:30 p.m. He will present, “Virtual Care and the Future of Medicine,” delving into the evolution, uses, workings, economics, results, and issues with virtual care, telehealth, and remote patient monitoring that have become staples of American medicine, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. The lecture series, made possible by the generous endowment of Dr. Joel Kupersmith and Judith Friedman Kupersmith, M.D. ’69, will focus on health ethics and policy. Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer, will deliver opening remarks. Remote participation is also available.

"Pet the Stress Away" Brings Comfort to Campus


The Medical Education Center lobby transformed into a haven of relaxation as students, staff, and faculty gathered to meet Reba and Cliffbar, two cherished rescue dogs from Paws Crossed Animal Rescue, on January 14. Organized by the Office of Student Mental Health and Wellness, the "Pet the Stress Away" event offered attendees a chance to unwind and experience a heartwarming break from their routines with mental health resources.

This year's theme is “Advancing Access and Equity: Moving from Awareness to Action,” as distinguished speakers present on topics of health care accessibility, maternal-fetal medicine, and obstetrics and gynecology care, while considering the historical lens of present inequities and community impacts. Speakers will address and applaud progress while detailing what still must be done to bridge present gaps.
