NYMC Faculty Mentor Two Semi-Finalists in Regeneron Science Talent Search Contest


Three hundred semi-finalists were selected from 2,162 entrants from 712 high schools across 46 states, Puerto Rico and ten other countries in the 2024 Regeneron Science Talent Search. The select included two students mentored by NYMC faculty. Justin Baldasarre from Hastings High School, mentored by Dazhong Xu, Ph.D., associate professor of pathology, microbiology and immunology, presented his research, “STING-Rich Ciliated Cells Protect the Fallopian Tube from Early Transformation in the Development of Ovarian Cancer;” and Anwen Cao from Horace Greeley High School, mentored by Christopher Whitehurst, Ph.D., assistant professor of pathology, microbiology, and immunology, and of biochemistry and molecular biology, presented “An Exploration of mTOR in Epstein-Barr Virus: Evaluating the Effect of EBV Deubiquitinating Enzyme BPLF1 on mTOR Complex 1 and 2.” In recognition of their accomplishments, both students and their schools will be awarded $2,000 each for their outstanding work.

NYMC and TU to Host “Ninety Minutes: The Medical Magazine of the Web”


On Thursday, February 1 at 12:30 p.m., NYMC and TU are set to present, “Ninety Minutes: The Medical Magazine of the Web,” where faculty experts will discuss all you need to know about know about RSV vaccines; prescriptions from online companies; the diagnosis of small foci of ductal-carcinoma-in-situ of the breast; sleep issues and CPAP machines, followed by a Q&A session. CME credits are available upon request.

Dextran Increases Risks After Carotid Endarterectomy 


Dextran, a medication used during carotid endarterectomy to mitigate the risk of embolism, was found to increase the risks of major adverse cardiac events without decreasing the risk of stroke, in a new study published by NYMC students, including lead author Jessica McQuaid Moore, M.S., SOM Class of 2025, and faculty in the Annals of Vascular Surgery.
