$2.725 Million in Federal Funding Helps Launch Two Programs at NYMC

Two innovative programs are on the horizon at NYMC thanks to recent federal funding. A $1,900,000 award from the Community Project Fund will support “Equity and Compassion in Medical Education Through Advanced Real-Time Simulations” and $825,000 of Congressionally directed spending will help launch the Women’s Institute for Science Entrepreneurship (WISE). Debra Bessen, Ph.D., Receives $2.9 Million NIH Grant for Preventing Strep A Infection

Debra Bessen, Ph.D., professor of pathology, microbiology and immunology, has been awarded a five-year $2,931,474 grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support the discovery and design of a vaccine to prevent Group A streptococci (Strep A) infection, which annually causes more than 750 million infections and over 500,000 deaths throughout the world. SHSP Rolls Out M.P.H. Generalist Program

SHSP opened the Spring 2023 semester with a new M.P.H. Generalist Program. The generalist program, which involves less time and cost, enables students to customize their education according to their interests and needs, while gaining a broad grounding in public health and expert knowledge in the core competency areas. FDA Awards Supriya Jain, M.D., $1.9 million for COVID-19 Vaccine-Associated Myocarditis Research

Supriya Jain, M.D., clinical associate professor of pediatrics and of radiology and clinical education liaison, has been awarded a Broad Agency Agreement (BAA) of $1,997,031 over five years by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to support groundbreaking research on COVID-19 vaccine-associated myocarditis using advanced cardiovascular imaging, including cardiac MRI (CMR). Augustine Moscatello, M.D., M.S., second from right, professor of clinical otolaryngology and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology at New York Medical College (NYMC) and director of otolaryngology at Westchester Medical Center, and Manoj T. Abraham, M.D., F.A.C.S, second from left, clinical associate professor of otolaryngology, treated patients in Western Ukraine at a regional hospital in Ivanko-Frankivsk as war devastates the country. Drs. Moscatello and Abraham collaborated with 15 current and retired medical professionals on a mission trip in September to treat more than 30 Ukrainian soldiers and civilians—the youngest approximately five years old. Study Finds Children of Lower Socioeconomic Status Suffer Worse Outcomes After Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) accounts for 50,000 pediatric hospitalizations annually in the United States and remains the most common cause of morbidity and mortality among pediatric and adolescent patients. A nationwide survey conducted by a group of NYMC students and faculty and physicians at Westchester Medical Center demonstrated those with poor socioeconomic status suffered worse outcomes, including increased mortality, more complicated courses of treatment and longer hospital stays. Traci F. Furbert-Gardner, M.D., clinical assistant of pediatrics and director of community engagement, and Michael D. Israel, M.P.H., assistant professor of medicine and distinguished visiting professor of public health, were named to City & State’s Health Care Power 100 listing.

Padmini Murthy, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., M.Phil., CHES, professor of public health and global health director, was invited to join the C20 India 2023 Core Group of Women and Child Health and Well Being in the health domain. C20 India 2023 is one of the official engagement groups of G20, an intergovernmental forum consisting of nineteen countries and the European Union that promote global economic growth, international trade and regulation of financial markets. The engagement groups provide a platform for Civil Society Organizations (CSO) around the world to voice the people’s aspirations to the world leaders in G20. Dr. Murthy is part of the health team tasked with developing health policy recommendations to be delivered to the G20 and assisting with the CSO outreach.
