STUDENT SUMMER RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT

Conor Prendergast, SOM Class of 2025, is assisting with research focusing on machine-learning and artificial intelligence (AI) in cancer imaging. Much like computers can be programmed to detect and predict patterns in data, Mr. Prendergast’s research is part of the effort of radiologists who are looking to do that with imaging—known as radiomics. The research includes examining machine-learning of oral cancer imaging, so that AI can better diagnose, help treat and predict the outcomes of oral cancer due to Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Mr. Prendergast’s project, conducted with his mentor, Laurent Dercle, M.D., Ph.D., associate research scientist in the Department of Radiology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, is now reviewing and synthesizing past research on HPV oral cancer radiomics, including CT, MRI, and PET scan images. If successful, the innovation in imaging can help fight HPV-related oral cancer, which is on the rise in younger populations.
