As we enjoy longer days and more time outdoors this summer, it’s important to stay mindful of the risks associated with UV exposure. In recognition of UV Safety Month, Shoshana Marmon, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of dermatology, shares expert tips to help you protect your skin and maintain long-term health.

Tips for Year-Round UV Protection

  • Slather on a broad-spectrum SPF 30 + daily. Re-apply at least every two hours and after swimming or sweating.
  • Cover up with Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) clothing. Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts or pants labeled UPF 50+, plus a wide-brim hat and UV-blocking sunglasses significantly cut UV exposure.
  • Seek shade 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. (peak UV). Plan outdoor time early morning or late afternoon; reflective surfaces like sand and water can bounce UV back even in the shade.
  • Skip tanning beds and sunlamps. Artificial UV is a proven human carcinogen and can expose individuals to intense levels of UVA rays, which are linked to skin cancer and premature aging.
  • Do regular skin self-exams. Look for any new, changing, or bleeding spots and see a dermatologist if you see notice suspicious.

TIPS OF THE WEEK

From the Phillip Capozzi, M.D., Library: The Access Services Department has implemented new service hours: Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Should you need assistance outside of these hours, please send a message via the Ask NYMC Library page.
