Center of Excellence in Precision Responses to Bioterrorism and Disasters Receives $1 Million in Funding 

Elected officials gathered with NYMC and Touro College and University System (TCUS) leadership to announce $1,000,000 in increased funding for the Center of Excellence in Precision Responses to Bioterrorism and Disasters within the Center for Disaster Medicine (CDM). The funding is a major increase since an initial annual pledge from New York lawmakers of $500,000 in 2017 and $925,000 in 2019, a sum that is matched by NYMC in support of the expanding work and impact of the Center. Golf Outing Honoring Leonard J. Newman, M.D. '70, Raises More than $235,000

More than 130 golfers hit the links at the famed Saint Andrew's Golf Course in Hastings on Hudson on June 28 to honor Leonard J. Newman, M.D. '70, second from left, longtime professor and chair of the Department of Pediatrics at NYMCThe outing, sponsored by the Board of Advisors, raised more than $235,000 for student scholarships and other important initiatives at NYMC. NYMC Offers Family Friendly Resources

Family, familial responsibilities and work life balance have taken on new light during the COVID-19 pandemic. While these values have always been important to NYMC and the Touro College and University System (TCUS), a new resource is now available to NYMC and Touro College of Dental Medicine (TCDM) students and employees: Family Friendly Campus Resources, a repository of information available on TouroOne. GHHS Student Clinician Ceremony Marks Milestone in Medical Education

NYMC students and faculty gathered under the tent outside of Sunshine Cottage to celebrate the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) Student Clinician Ceremony on June 24, when members of the SOM Class of 2023 took an oath of humanism prior to starting their clinical clerkships. Resident physicians from clinical affiliates, selected by the outgoing third-year class, were honored with Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Awards for demonstrating exceptional humanistic qualities in the care of patients, including compassion, empathy, professionalism and service, as well as going above and beyond in role as teachers to medical students. Department of Surgery Hosts 18th Annual Louis R.M. DelGuercio Distinguished Visiting Professorship and Research Day

The 18th Annual Louis R.M. DelGuercio Distinguished Visiting Professorship and Research Day featuring keynote speaker Raymond R. Price, M.D., FACS, fourth from left in photo, took place on June 18. During his address, Dr. Price, vice chair for global health at the Center for Global Surgery, clinical professor and adjunct associate professor of the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, Division of Public Health at the University of Utah, shared an inspirational story of his experience with global health and the immense impact it has on communities worldwide. Fitness Centers Re-Open on Campus
 
The Dr. Edward F. and Mrs. Anna M. Asprinio Fitness Center at 19 Skyline Drive and the Nicholas and Liberta Testa Fitness Center in student housing have re-opened. The fitness centers will be open from 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily. Face coverings are required for all occupants and equipment must be wiped down before and after each use. The fitness centers and associated spaces will receive a daily deep cleaning after 7:00 p.m. Usage will be monitored and the hours may be adjusted accordingly.

LGBTQ+ AIM Group Participates in Community Pride Rally
 
LGBTQ+ Advocates in Medicine (AIM), a student-led organization at NYMC, participated in the Greenburgh Pride Rally at Patriots Park in Tarrytown, New York, on June 26, hosted by the Greenburgh Human Rights Advisory Committee during Pride Month. The group engaged with rally-goers on health disparities in the LGBTQ+ community and the representation of the community in health care workforce. LGBTQ+ AIM staffed a table at the rally where they displayed statistics relating to the disparities and testimonials for LGBTQ+ members that described negative interactions with doctors. ACCOLADES
Mill Etienne, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.A.N., F.A.E.S.vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion, associate dean of student affairs and associate professor of neurology and of medicine, was named a finalist by Crain's New York Business for the 2021 Diversity and Inclusion Champions of Change Award recognizing leaders who have promoted initiatives advancing diversity and inclusion. 

Dana Mordue, Ph.D., vice chancellor for middle states accreditation and associate professor of pathology, microbiology and immunology, was named to the Westchester County Biosciences Taskforce that was established to support the Biosciences Industry Desk and keep the Office of Economic Development up to date on trends and issues within the local and regional ecosystem.
Jennifer Riekert, M.B.A., vice president of communications and strategic initiatives, was honored with the Trailblazer Award at the YWCA of Yonkers Annual Spirit of a Woman Awards Gala on June 24, honoring women making strides in public service, business and philanthropy.
