New Telehealth Partner for Student Mental Health Services

Starting July 7, NYMC will transition its virtual psychiatry and counseling services from Teladoc to a new telehealth partner, TimelyCare, in response to student feedback seeking improved mental health support. Teladoc services will continue through June 30, and students are encouraged to speak with their current providers to plan next steps and request their records be sent directly to them for continuity of care. TimelyCare will be available to all students at no cost, offering services seven days a week from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., along with 24/7 on-demand support. Additional information about setting up a TimelyCare account and available services will be shared by email. For questions or assistance, students can contact the Office of Student Mental Health and Wellness.

Stay Safe and Connected with the NYMC 4U App

The Office of Student Mental Health and Wellness and the Office of Public Safety are pleased to invite all students to download the NYMC 4U app, a platform specifically designed to enhance the safety and mental well-being of the student community. Recognizing the importance of quick and easy access to critical information and services, NYMC 4U brings together real-time security updates and mental health resources in one convenient location, offering a holistic approach to campus life. Key features include an after-hours chat option for direct assistance, quick access to campus services and practical needs such as parking information, emergency contact details and 24/7 on- and off-campus resources, and the Friend Walk feature, which allows users to share their real-time location with a trusted contact for added safety. Students are encouraged to download the app to ensure they are prepared in the event of an emergency.

Cellular Receptor GPR75 Linked to the Progression of Liver Disease

Liver disease—particularly chronic forms like metabolic dysfunction-associated liver disease and cirrhosis—represents a major global health challenge, responsible for millions of deaths annually. Yet despite its severity and rising prevalence, current treatments mainly manage complications rather than stop or reverse the disease itself. A new study by researchers at NYMC, including Victor G. Garcia, Ph.D.’15, associate professor of pharmacology, offers hope for changing that, potentially paving the way for more effective therapies that improve outcomes for people with liver disease.

ACCOLADE

Anthony Sozzo, M.S.Ed., M.A., associate dean for student affairs for the School of Medicine and director of student financial planning and student activities, participated in the annual National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) Graduate/Professional community Advocacy Pipeline along with other NASFAA members in May in Washington, D.C. The Advocacy Pipeline entailed six meetings with various congressional offices. During the meetings, pipeline participants focused on financial aid policy issues specifically related to their graduate/professional students. They discussed the importance of preserving the Graduate PLUS loan, eliminating student loan origination fees, simplifying income-driven repayment, and protecting the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

The graduating SHSP Class of 2025 marked a notable achievement in the growth of two joint degree programs. The Pharm.D./M.P.H. class, in conjunction with the Touro College of Pharmacy, saw its largest cohort to date, with eight students. Additionally, this year marks the first graduating class of the D.D.S/M.P.H. program, in conjunction with the TCDM, with four students completing the joint degree. These milestones lay a strong foundation for the future of joint degree programs and interdisciplinary education.
