Graduate Student Association Hosts 5K to Benefit Feeding Westchester
Runners gathered at Tarrytown Lakes Park on March 15 for the Graduate Student Association’s (GSA) annual 5K, combining fitness and philanthropy in support of Feeding Westchester, a nonprofit dedicated to addressing food insecurity in the local community. While the in-person race has wrapped up, the initiative continues through April 30 with a virtual participation option, allowing supporters to keep the momentum going and help provide meals to families in need. "We are grateful to all the students and community members who joined us in person and contributed to this meaningful cause," said Rahim Hirani, center, a M.D.-Ph.D. candidate and GSA president. "Your participation and donations help support efforts to fight hunger in our local community. Thank you for showing up, running together, and making a difference!"

In recognition of National Brain Awareness Week, Mill Etienne, M.D. ‘02, M.P.H., vice chancellor, associate dean for student affairs, and professor of neurology and of medicine, shares ways to keep your brain in good health.
Tips to Boost Your Brain Health
- Prioritize regular exercise to improve circulation and increase oxygen flow to the brain.
- Get a good night’s sleep, which plays a critical role in memory, learning, and overall brain health.
- Maintain a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and stay well hydrated.
Many people overlook the importance of protecting and maintaining their hearing as a key part of supporting their brain health. Research has shown that individuals who are hard of hearing and need hearing aids but do not use them have a higher risk of developing dementia and may experience faster cognitive decline. Hearing loss can lead to reduced engagement in conversations and social activities, which may contribute to isolation and further impact brain health.
In addition to hearing health, sleep also plays a critical role in protecting the brain. Recent research showing that the brain clears toxins linked to dementia during deep sleep has made me place even greater importance on getting a good night’s rest. While new medications are being developed to remove these toxins, prioritizing healthy sleep allows the brain to perform this process naturally. Good sleep also improves daily focus, energy levels, and memory.

In recognition of Women’s History Month, NYMC remembers former chair of the Department of Microbiology from 1946 to 1962, Lois C. Lillick, Ph.D., M.D. '53, M.P.H., whose legacy spans significant contributions to the basic sciences, medicine, and public health. Her clinical experience as a consulting physician at NYMC’s affiliate hospitals sparked a deep interest in public health as the front line of disease prevention in underserved communities. Recognizing the critical need for home health care for aging and vulnerable populations, she became a strong advocate for including home care services in Medicare and Medicaid. Following her passing in 1976, the California Association for Health Services at Home established the Lois Lillick Award to honor outstanding leadership in home care advocacy.
