School of Medicine Class of 2021 Celebrates Match Day
Members of the New York Medical College (NYMC) School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2021 celebrated the next step on their path to becoming physicians on March 19, as they learned where they were matched to medical residency programs and will continue their training for the next several years in their chosen specialty. Although it was not the traditional in-person envelope opening ceremony, students learned where they matched online and a live stream of the event as well as interactive chat rooms allowed the students to celebrate together virtually with family and friends joining in the celebration. NYMC Receives $2.2 Million HECap Award
New York Medical College (NYMC) is one of 35 colleges and universities across New York State to receive funding from the Higher Education Capital (HECap) Matching Grant Program which supports infrastructure improvements at New York's private, not-for-profit colleges and universities. The latest round of funding in the amount of $2,219,031 will be used for creating open concept laboratory space capable of housing multidisciplinary research teams and shared instrumentation at NYMC, which will complement the renovations already being planned as part of NYMC's energy performance project. The 32nd Annual Graduate Student Research Forum Highlights Impressive Student Scientific Investigations
The 32nd Annual Graduate Student Research Forum (GSRF) on March 16 took on a virtual format this year but the student research remained unchanged--an impressive array of scientific achievements presented in oral and poster formats. Sponsored by the Graduate Student Association (GSA) in the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences (GSBMS), the GSRF is an opportunity for students to present their research in progress, sharpen their presentation and communication skills, answer questions from the audience and receive valuable feedback from judges. MSCHE Virtual Site Visit Set for April 12 - 15
Regional accreditation through the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and is required for students to be eligible to receive federal financial aid. The re-accreditation process, every eight years, includes a comprehensive Self-Study engaging senior leadership, faculty, staff and students and is designed to promote self-reflection and evaluation so that the College can assess how well it has been advancing its mission and goals and identify opportunities for improvement. NYMC submitted its MSCHE Self-Study and will be hosting a virtual visit of MSCHE peer team evaluators on April 12-15 to discuss the College and Self-Study in the context of the College mission and goals and Strategic Plan. NYMed Talks Focuses on Access and Excess in Health Care
Focusing on the timely topic of access and excess in health care, the Seventh Annual NYMed Talks, organized entirely by School of Medicine (SOM) students, took place virtually on March 11. The daylong, interdisciplinary and interprofessional event, which featured a variety of guest speakers, is designed to expose students studying to work in the health care professions to topics outside of their academic curriculum. HSL Set to Host Virtual Anti-Racism Book Club
The New York Medical College (NYMC) community is invited to participate in discussions of The New York Times bestseller, Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor's Reflections on Race and Medicine by Damon Tweedy, M.D. The book club will run from late March through late May and registration is required.The book examines the complex ways in which both black doctors and patients must navigate the difficult and often contradictory terrain of race and medicine. As the author transforms from a student to a practicing physician, he discovers how often race influences his encounters with patients. Through their stories, he illustrates the complex social, cultural and economic factors at the root of many health problems in the black community. The book club is co-sponsored by the Health Sciences Library, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and NYMC Chapter of the Student National Medical Association. Continuing medical education credits are available.
