March 20, the first day of spring 2026, marked both the beginning of a season of growth at NYMC and a new beginning for the SOM Class of 2026 as they celebrated Match Day and learned where they would continue their medical training and growth as physicians.

NYMC Explores the Lasting Impact of Marie Curie at Women’s History Month Event
The Office of Campus Engagement hosted the Women’s History Month event From Curie to Clinic: The Legacy of Radiation in Medicine on March 18. As part of the program, attendees heard historical insights from Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer, on the life and work of Marie Curie, Ph.D. Participants also viewed a short biographical film highlighting Curie’s pioneering research on radioactivity—a term she coined—and her discovery of the elements polonium and radium. Her extraordinary achievements also include being the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person to win the prize twice, and the only individual to receive Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields. Following the screening, a panel of NYMC faculty engaged in a moderated discussion connecting Dr. Curie’s groundbreaking work to contemporary medical practice, professional identity, and the evolving role of women in academic medicine and health care leadership.

Department of Public Health Introduces New Certificate Option
The Department of Public Health is now offering the Advanced Certificate in Epidemiology, expanding its total certificate options to eight. Students enrolled in the M.P.H. Generalist program can pursue these certificates concurrently, enhancing the flexibility and value of their graduate education, or choose to complete them independently. The new certificate focuses on strengthening analytical and research skills while using practical tools to understand how diseases affect populations. This addition further enhances opportunities for students to specialize and advance in the field of public health.

NYMC Teams Shine at Inaugural RISE Case Competition
NYMC had two teams comprised of students from SOM and SHSP participate in the first ever Reimagining Interdisciplinary Social Entrepreneurship (RISE) Case Competition, AECOM’s first graduate-level case competition at the intersection of health equity, innovation, and social entrepreneurship, on March 15. The Einstein Innovation Group, who spearheaded the event, tasked teams of students with various backgrounds to research, create, and present a 12-minute pitch to tackle a social entrepreneurship case: innovative solutions to housing insecurity in the Bronx with a budget of $250 million dollars. The winning team, selected for their community project supplementing the Cross-Bronx greenification initiative, comprised of M1s Young Kim, top row, center; Anthony Kang, top row, second from right; Saaya Patel, top row, left; and Dr.P.H. candidates Levi Vazquez, Namita Kulkarni, bottom row, left; and Shantigra Williams, top row, right. New Vein-Harvesting Technique Could Reduce Bypass Graft Failure
Vein graft failure remains a major challenge in coronary artery bypass surgery, with nearly one in four grafts failing within the first 12 to 18 months, often due to injury sustained during vein harvesting. Now, as reported in JTCVS Open, a new vein-harvesting approach known as Minimally Invasive No-Touch (MINT), developed by John Gallagher, M.D., a vascular surgeon in private practice in New York City and affiliated with the Montreal Heart Institute Research Centre, and tested in the laboratory of Victor Garcia, Ph.D. ’15, associate professor of pharmacology, shows promising evidence of preserving vein health and improving graft durability.

Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer, was an invited speaker at the StandWithUs Conference, an annual gathering of students, educators, community leaders, and activists from around the world, focused on Israel education, combating antisemitism, and strengthening community connections, In Las Vegas, March 15 – 18. He presented, “We will tolerate no Jews here”: A History of Medical Education Antisemitism in the United States and Canada.

In recognition of Women’s History Month, NYMC remembers Mary B. Stark, Ph.D., a pioneering drosophila oncology researcher, who was the first woman to chair a department at NYMC and founded the Department of Histology and Embryology at the College in 1926. In 1919, Dr. Stark was named professor of histology and embryology in the Department of Anatomy. In 1926, the year she was the recipient of a major grant from the National Academy of Sciences, histology and embryology became a full department under her leadership.
