TIP OF THE WEEK

Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 9, and the time change can interrupt your internal clock, so here are some tips from Lori Solomon, M.D. ’99, M.P.H. ’09, chair and clinical associate professor of family and community medicine and director of the Family Health Center, to make the transition smoother:

Before the Change:

  • Adjust Gradually – Go to bed 15-30 minutes earlier a few days in advance.
  • Get Sun – Natural light helps reset your internal clock.
  • Limit Caffeine and Screen time – Reduce blue light exposure at night to promote better sleep.

On the Day of:

  • Set Clocks Ahead Early – Change them the evening before to mentally adjust. Don’t forget to check smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries.
  • Stick to Routine – Keep meal, sleep, and exercise schedules consistent.

After the Change:

  • Prioritize Sleep – If you feel groggy, take short naps (20-30 minutes), but avoid long naps.
  • Stay Active – Exercise helps regulate your sleep-wake cycle.
  • Hydrate and Eat Well – Good nutrition helps your body adjust faster.
