New York Medical College has been awarded $10 million by the Department of Defense in partnership with the Uniformed Services University– the DoD’s own medical school – to address one of the most urgent and underexamined challenges in modern military medicine: how to save lives when immediate evacuation isn’t possible.

Preparations are in full swing across the NYMC community as final details come together for the 167th Commencement, taking place Monday, May 18, at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, New York. This milestone celebration will honor the achievements of the Class of 2026 and welcome their families, friends, and supporters.

NYMC Rallies for Days of Giving
The NYMC community came together for the ninth annual Days of Giving on March 24 and 25, raising money for student scholarships, the annual fund, research, the Center for Disaster Medicine, and the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center. “The success of this year’s Days of Giving is a testament to the strength and generosity of the NYMC community. In just 48 hours, our alumni, faculty, students, and friends came together with the shared purpose of helping open doors for our students, fueling innovation in research, and enhancing hands-on learning experiences. We are deeply grateful to all who made this impact possible,” said Stacy Velarde, second from right, chief development officer.

NYMC Community Recognizes International Epilepsy Awareness Day
The NYMC community joined faculty leaders Mill Etienne, M.D. ’02, M.P.H., vice chancellor, associate dean for student affairs, and professor of neurology and of medicine; Tracey A. Milligan, M.D., M.S., professor and chair of the Department of Neurology; and Manisha G. Holmes, M.D., FAES, associate professor of neurology and neurosurgery and section chief of epilepsy at Westchester Medical Center, along with the Student Interest Group in Neurology, to recognize the International Day for Epilepsy Awareness by wearing purple on March 26. The event highlighted the importance of raising awareness about epilepsy and the critical work of health care providers and researchers in advancing treatment and improving the lives of patients living with the condition.

SHSP Showcases Research and Collaboration at Annual Research and Scholarship Day
The School of Health Sciences and Practice Research and Scholarship Day, in partnership with Student Healthcare Executives (StuHe), hosted an engaging evening dedicated to scientific discovery and collaboration on March 26. Research presented by students, faculty, and alumni covered a wide range of community-service and research projects, including Medicaid cost trends, obesity, safe patient transfer knowledge, cold exposure, Alzheimer’s Disease, and more.

Coverage Matters: Uninsured Children Face Worse TBI Outcomes
Affecting more than 475,000 children each year, pediatric traumatic brain injury is the leading cause of serious disability and death in children. A study by NYMC faculty, including Carrie Muh, M.D., M.S., M.H.Sc., professor of neurosurgery and of pediatrics and senior author on the study, published in Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery reports that uninsured patients face more than a 12-fold higher risk of death than those with either private or public insurance.

TCDM Gives Free Oral Health Screenings and Education to More Than 300 Schoolchildren
On March 18, TCDM hosted its annual Give Kids A Smile event at Winfield L. Morse School in Sleepy Hollow, New York, where the school gymnasium transformed into an interactive learning environment with fun dental-themed activities designed to make oral health more engaging and accessible, as well as engage with dental professional in a welcoming, non-clinical setting. These young students were given the knowledge and tools to build lifelong healthy habits, many of whom have limited access to regular dental care. The event is part of TCDM's participation in the American Dental Association’s Give Kids A Smile initiative, which mobilizes dental professionals across the country to serve children in underserved communities.

Center for Disaster Medicine (CDM) Deputy Director Tai M. Lee Jr., NRP, EMT-T, CIC/RF, MEP, center, Educator Thomas McAdam, M.P.H., right, and Fellow Craig Martinez, left, presented the Tactical Emergency Casualty Care + Rescue Task Force course, a collaboration between the CDM and the Michael Tang Regional Center for Clinical Simulation at Touro University Nevada. The course was conducted from March 23 - 25 where first responders, nurses, and security personnel were trained in the concepts of bleeding control, airway management, and victim evacuation.
