Doctor Seher Banu Farabi Atak

Seher Banu Farabi Atak, M.D., a second-year dermatology resident in the NYMC-sponsored Dermatology Residency Program at New York Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan, was recognized with a dermMentors Resident of Distinction Award and sponsored to attend the 2024 Maui Derm Hawaii conference in January. At the conference, Dr. Farabi Atak presented her research on stem cell treatment for intractable wounds. She was one of five dermatology residents from across the U.S. to be recognized with the prestigious award.

Marina K. Holz, Ph.D., M.P.H. '23, GSBMS dean, professor of cell biology and anatomy, and interim chair of biochemistry and molecular biology, was appointed lead associate editor for the cancer section of Nature Communications Biology.

Ashanda M. Saint Jean, M.D. ‘98, clinical associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology, presented at the Maternal Immunization: Opportunities and Challenges webinar sponsored by the National Adult and Influenza Immunization Summit and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists on February 22. Dr. Saint Jean's presentation examined maternal immunization rates, the effects it has on different populations, and ways physicians can improve vaccination rates in pregnant people.

The Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology and the laboratory of Xiu-Min Li, M.D, M.S., professor of pathology, microbiology and immunology and of otolaryngology, was well represented with nine poster presentations at the 2024  American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology conference Washington, D.C., February 23 – 26, 2024.

Anish R. Maskey, Ph.D. '23, post-doctoral fellow, received a travel award and presented “Inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus-induced mast cells/ basophils activation via regulation of NFkB signaling pathway by small molecule compound berberine.”

Ibrahim Musa, Ph.D. ’23, post-doctoral fellow, received a travel award and presented “Inhibition of IgE production in Plasma Cell Line by Cannabinoid-Containing Product Associated with Regulation of XBP-1 and IgE heavy chain expression.”

Devora Loike Weinstein, SOM Class of 2026, presented “Investigation of Plant Derived Compound 7,4 Dihydroxy Flavone on IgE production.”

Carolina Taico, SOM Class of 2026, presented “Potential Treatment of Food Anaphylaxis: Plant-derived Compound Formononetin Prevents Basophil Degranulation.”

Daniel Kopulos, M.S. student Class of 2024, presented “Berberine Suppression of IgE Production via Inhibiting the Gene Expression of Telomere and Telomerase in Human B Cell Line.”

Niradiz Reyes, Ph.D., visiting scientist from the University of Cartagena, Colombia, presented “Effects of Multi-component TCM therapy on skin microbiome of infants with severe eczema associated-with topical steroid withdrawal.”

Matthew Kwan, summer intern, presented “Investigation of Berberine's Potential in Attenuating Staphylococcus aureus-Induced Inflammatory Responses.”

Christian Figueroa, summer intern, presented “Investigation of in vitro anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects of berberine.”

Fariba Ardalani, Ph.D. candidate, presented “Comprehensive murine model of IgE mediated multiple food-group cross-reactive anaphylaxis.”
