Thirty-Second Annual Graduate Student Research Forum Will Take Place Virtually on March 16
The 32nd Annual Graduate Student Research Forum, sponsored by the Graduate Student Association in the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences, is set for Tuesday, March 16. This year's forum will be virtual and a schedule and links will be forthcoming. The forum will feature oral and poster presentations of student research and a keynote address by alum Anton M. Bennett, Ph.D. '93. Dr. Bennett, the Dorys McConnell Duberg Professor of Pharmacology and professor of comparative medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine, will present, "Let the Data Take You Where it May -- A Journey of Studying Protein Tyrosine Phosphatases in Disease." Dr. Bennett also serves as co-director of the program in integrative cell signaling and neurobiology of metabolism and director of minority affairs for the graduate program in biological biomedical sciences at Yale.

NYMC Gets Ready to Celebrate the Class of 2021
Plans for the New York Medical College (NYMC) 162nd Commencement and Touro College of Dental Medicine (TCDM) 2nd Commencement are well underway to celebrate the Class of 2021 on Wednesday, May 26 at 7:00 p.m. The virtual event will include one unified Commencement ceremony for NYMC and TCDM with all the usual pomp and circumstance, followed by four individual online events for the School of Medicine, Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Health Sciences and Practice and TCDM. Commencement speaker, Catherine D. DeAngelis, M.D. M.P.H., University Distinguished Service Professor Emerita, professor emerita of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and professor of health policy and management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a leader in academic medicine will address the Class of 2021. Chancellor Halperin Addresses Racist Depictions in Children's Books
Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer, shared his thoughts on the racist depictions of Asians and Blacks in children's books. Read Dr. Halperin's opinion piece, " What Dr. Seuss can still teach us" published in The Hill on March 7, 2021.

George W. Contreras, M.E.P., M.P.H., M.S., CEM, FAcEM, assistant director of the Center for Disaster Medicine and assistant professor in the Institute of Public Health, received a proclamation from Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer in recognition for his 30 years of service in various capacities during disasters and in other times of need on March 3, 2021. The day was declared "George W. Contreras Appreciate Day" to mark the occasion.

Marina K. Holz, Ph.D., dean of the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences and professor of cell biology and anatomy, was the keynote speaker at University of Puerto Rico Research Fair via Facebook Live on March 4.

Padmini Murthy, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., M.Phil., CHES, professor of public health and global health director and clinical assistant professor of family and community medicine, was speaker at the United Nations Association Southern New York State Division webinar focused on global and domestic reproductive health issues including ending the global gag rule and promoting the Black Maternal Health Omnibus Act on March 5. The event was in conjunction with International Women's Day and the 65th UN Commission on the Status of Women.

Gary M. Williams, M.D., professor emeritus of pathology, was reappointed to the roster of experts of the World Health Organization/Food and Agriculture Organization Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) for five years. The JECFA provides scientific evaluations of food components to the Codex Alimentarius Commission for use in setting purity and safety standards.

...March is Women's History Month.
The late Rita F. Girolamo, M.D. '51, professor emerita of radiology, was one of only sixteen women in the Class of 1951 and was the first woman president of the Medical Board at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan. She was a pioneer in mammography and thermography and under her direction, New York Medical College was one of the first two centers in the U.S. to use diaphanography (transillumination), a technique for diagnosis of breast disease. There is a permanent display to honor Dr. Girolamo in the hallway to the radiology suite outside of the Health Sciences Library.
