Understanding Women’s Health Through Systems, Policy, and Experience

On May 7, the Phillip Capozzi, M.D. Library, in collaboration with Westchester Medical Center, hosted an engaging discussion titled When Women Get Sick: An Empowering Approach for Getting the Support You Need. The program featured author Rebecca Bloom, left, a Yale College and NYU School of Law graduate and former workplace and benefits attorney. Drawing on both professional expertise and personal experience, Bloom explored the complex systems that shape women’s access to care, including employer policies, insurance frameworks, and health care delivery. Her book offers practical guidance for patients, clinicians, and public health advocates navigating illness and recovery, with a focus on informed decision-making and self-advocacy. Moderating the discussion was Deborah Viola, M.B.A., Ph.D., right, network vice president, Office of Research and Grants Administration at Westchester Medical Center and adjunct associate professor of public health in the SHSP. The conversation highlighted both structural challenges and actionable strategies to better support women throughout their health care journeys.

STUDENT SCAVENGER HUNT

Ready to take on a campus challenge? Track down the fish footman on campus, and you could score an NYMC t-shirt.

Where minds can rest and worries slow,

And students go when feelings grow,

There’s a place where help is always near,

For calm support when stress is here.

Not lecture halls or labs you roam,

But somewhere that can feel like home.

Where listening ears and steady care

Help lighten burdens people bear.

When things feel heavy, thoughts feel loud,

Or life feels lost within the crowd—

Seek out the door where calm is planned,

With guidance offered, kind and hand,

In a building high where views feel bright,

A skyline stop to set things right.

A place for balance, health, and light,

For wellness when things aren’t quite right.

Once the Footman is found and the riddle is cracked,

Your journey is set—there’s no turning back.

Bring it to the Office of Public Relations to prove it’s true,

Claim your shirt—your victory is due!

Note: You can win only once, and only one winner per find.

To claim your prize, email the Office of Public Relations.
