Study Demonstrates Novel Area of Investigation to Treat Hypertension  


Hypertension is an important risk factor for the development of heart disease, stroke and kidney disease that affects greater than 40 percent of the United States population. Nicholas Ferreri, Ph.D., professor and vice chair of pharmacology, has contributed much to the field of research on hypertension, including most recently a study selected as an Editor’s Pick in the American Heart Association journal Hypertension that uncovered a new area of investigation that could lead to novel treatment approaches. Dr. El Ouaamari Traveled the World in the Name of Diabetes Research


After 15 years of studying diabetes research, Abdelfattah El Ouaamari, Ph.D., joins NYMC as associate professor of cell biology and anatomy and of pharmacology after an extensive nationwide search. His career aspirations in diabetes research brought him from Morocco to France and now the United States. While diabetes is his niche, he is transitioning to explore obesity research and looking to investigate behavioral sciences in the near future. Read the full story on Dr. El Ouaamari.

SOM Student Awarded Prestigious Research Scholarship to Study Optic Nerve Regeneration


Madison Weiss, SOM Class of 2024, has been awarded the Dr. Larry J. Singerman and Dr. Stephen G. Schwartz Research Scholarship and will spend a year conducting research at the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, FL. Ms. Weiss will join a lab that studies the retina at the Institute and focus on optic nerve regeneration after injury with the goal of identifying potential therapeutic molecules for regrowing damaged optic nerves and ultimately restoring sight. SOM Student Graduates with Extensive Neurosurgical Research Publications


Medical school has been a whirlwind of research activity for Jacob Greisman, SOM Class of 2023, that has included co-authoring 13 published manuscripts to date and presenting at several national conferences on a range of neurosurgical research topics, including brain tumor surgery, cervical stenosis and craniosynostosis surgery. Three faculty members were honored at Westchester Magazine's tenth annual Healthcare Heroes Awards luncheon on May 11 and profiled in the May 2023 issue of the magazine: Manoj Abraham, M.D., center, clinical associate professor of otolaryngology, Augustine Moscatello, M.D., M.S., left, professor of clinical otolaryngology and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology, and Mill Etienne, M.D. ‘02, M.P.H., FAAN, FAES, right, vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion, associate dean for student affairs, and associate professor of neurology and medicine. Alumna Ellen Bloom, M.P.H. ’00, was also honored. 

Neil W. Schluger, M.D., the Barbara and William Rosenthal Chair of the Department of Medicine, was selected as a Crain’s 2023 Notable Health Care Leader, which honors individuals in health care who are deemed by their peers and the Crain’s editorial staff to be influencing change in health care through their executive responsibility, leadership abilities, medical expertise, achievements, philanthropic endeavors and innovation. He was profiled in the May 15 issue of Crain’s New York Business.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. From the Office of Student Mental Health and Wellness (SMHW): The SMHW webpage provides information on tips, tools and self-help resources, community resources, diversity, inclusion and social justice, body image and more.


Take an anonymous Mental Health Screening (anxiety/depression/burnout, etc). SMHW offers The Interactive Screening Program, an online tool that provides a confidential way to take a brief screening. Every screen is reviewed by a SMHW clinician. Students can anonymously communicate with the program counselor to receive recommendations, feedback and support for connecting to available mental health services.


SMHW offers free, unlimited counseling sessions and support 24/7 at 1-(855) 384-1800
