NYMC Names Tracey A. Milligan, M.D., Chair of Neurology
NYMC SOM has named Tracey A. Milligan, M.D., as chair of the Department of Neurology. In addition, she will serve as director of neurology at Westchester Medical Center. Dr. Milligan, an expert in epilepsy treatment, joins NYMC from serving as associate professor at Harvard Medical School and distinguished clinician and vice chair for education in the Department of Neurology at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Four NYMC faculty members were among 16 Healthcare Heroes selected by Westchester Magazine for 2021, clockwise from top left: Traci Furbert Gardner, M.D. '98; Renee Garrick, M.D.; Sheila Nolan, M.D.; and Ammir R. NYMC Hosts Paul K. Woolf, M.D., Pediatric Trainee Research Day
NYMC SOM Department of Pediatrics, Boston Children's Health Physicians and the Children's Health and Research Foundation Inc., co-hosted the 11th Annual Paul K. Woolf, M.D., Pediatric Trainee Research Day virtually on May 19. The event highlighted new and innovative biomedical research in pediatrics and fosters academic discussions. Mill Etienne, M.D. '02, M.P.H. FAAN, FAES, vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion, associate dean of student affairs and associate professor of neurology and of medicine, was a guest speaker at Westchester County Executive George Latimer's virtual town hall on May 13, featuring an open discussion on the COVID-19 vaccine and teens.

Taylor Gerber, an M.P.H. student in health policy and management and the advanced certificate in emergency management program, was selected as one of ten fellows of the highly competitive John D. Solomon Fellowship for Public Service, the first student fellowship in New York City devoted specifically to emergency management. The program provides ten graduate students with the opportunity to complete a nine-month paid fellowship in an agency of the New York City government or a nonprofit organization. Ms. Gerber will start her fellowship at the New York City Department of Education, Emergency Management Division in September.

Dana Mordue, Ph.D., vice chancellor for middle states accreditation and associate professor of pathology, microbiology and immunology, presented "Search for Unknown Host Factors Important for Babesiosis" at the Third International Babesiosis Meeting, Yale University, that took place virtually on April 24-25.

Alejandra Puerta, an M.P.H. candidate in epidemiology, Class of 2021, was elected to the board of directors of the New York State Public Health Association for a three-year term beginning in July.

Denise C. Tahara, Ph.D., associate professor of health policy and management, was elected as president of the New York State Public Health Association for a two-year term beginning in July.

Katharine Yamulla, M.A., CHSE, senior director of competency-based assessment and clinical skills education and director of the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center, and colleagues from the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and Albert Einstein College of Medicine, presented a co-institutional, peer reviewed workshop, "Evaluating Curricular Materials to Mitigate Bias," at the virtual 2021 Association of American Medical Colleges Joint Group on Educational Affairs (GEA) Conference, on April 21. The conference focused on the theme of equity, diversity, justice and inclusion across medical education along with other innovations, scholarship and research advancing the field of medical education.
