NYMC Gathers Experts for In-Depth Look at Vector-Borne Diseases Impacting New York
Attendees gathered in Nevins Auditorium for an engaging and informative afternoon focused on advancing clinical understanding of vector-borne diseases on May 22. The event opened with welcoming remarks from Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.M.S., M.B.A., FAAP, FACPM, right, dean of the SHSP and vice president for government affairs, setting the tone for a series of expert-led presentations. Maria Aguero-Rosenfeld, M.D., third from right, clinical professor of medicine and pathology, New York University/Langone, discussed the diagnosis of Human Granulocytic Anaplasmosis, followed by Luis Marcos, M.D., fourth from right, program director of infectious diseases and associate professor of medicine at Stony Brook Medicine, who addressed the clinical presentation of babesiosis. Susan Madison-Antenucci, Ph.D., second from right, lab chief of bloodborne and parasitic diseases, Wadsworth Lab, provided insights into public health laboratory testing for Babesia and other tickborne diseases. Raymond Dattwyler, M.D., professor of pathology, microbiology and immunology and of medicine and pediatrics, offered guidance on interpreting Lyme disease testing. Jennifer White, M.P.H., third from left, director of the Vector-borne Disease Program, New York State Department of Health, presented on mosquito-borne infections of concern to New York clinicians. The event concluded with Melissa Prusinski, fourth from left, deputy director of vector surveillance, Vector-borne Disease Program, New York State Department of Health, who shared updates from both the lab and the field on tick-borne infections and related conditions across the state.

TU Research Day 2025 Explores “Plasticity in Research: AI and Beyond”
Students, faculty, and researchers from across TU gathered at the Cross River Campus in Times Square for an inspiring afternoon of discovery and dialogue at this year’s Research Day, themed “Plasticity in Research: AI and Beyond,” on May 7. The event spotlighted the adaptability of researchers working at the intersection of emerging technology and scientific inquiry. Attendees heard from Sarah Eskreis-Winkler, M.D., Ph.D., head of artificial intelligence research and diagnostic radiologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, whose keynote address explored how artificial intelligence is transforming diagnostic imaging and breast cancer care. Fawaz Al-Mufti, M.D., associate chair of research in neurology and associate professor of neurology, neurosurgery, and of radiology, presented on cutting-edge neuroendovascular treatments and the evolving role of minimally invasive techniques in stroke and cerebrovascular care. The afternoon also featured poster presentations and showcases from students and faculty across Touro’s undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. Awards were presented to Ph.D. candidates in the GSBMS Karen Jackson, for "Evaluation of Immunogenicity of Intranasal COVID-19 Vaccine Candidates;" Callie Hollander, for "Genetic Deletion of STAT4 Protects Long-Term Memory Storage Mechanisms from High-Fat, High-Cholesterol (HFD-C) Diet-Induced Impairments;" and Eliza Sherman-Daniels, SOM Class of 2027, for “Discovery and Evaluation of Novel Antifungals Against Multidrug Resistant Candida auris by High-Throughput Screening of Small Molecule Libraries.”

Sherlita Amler, M.D., M.S., Ed.S., RN, FAAP, CEM, adjunct professor of public health, clinical associate professor of pediatrics, senior fellow in the Center for Disaster Medicine, and commissioner of health for Westchester County, addressed graduates of Mercy University’s School of Health and Natural Science at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, and received the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa.

Marie T. Ascher, M.S., M.P.H., the Lillian Hetrick Huber Endowed Director of the Phillip Capozzi, , M.D., Library, received the 2025 Lucretia W. McClure Excellence in Education Award from the Medical Library Association (MLA) at its virtual business meeting on May 21. The award honors outstanding educators in health sciences librarianship. She was recognized for founding and leading the Critical Appraisal Institute for Librarians, serving as course director for the professional development course and training more than 200 librarians in evidence-based practice. She has secured multiple NIH grants and held key MLA leadership roles, including on the board of directors, has presented widely, published extensively, and earned several honors, including the MLA Beatty Volunteer Service Award.

May is National Stop the Bleed Month. On May 10, Tai M. Lee Jr., NRP, EMT-T, CIC/RF, MEP, assistant director of the CDM, and Melissa Konen, educator in the CDM, provided EMT students from local high schools training on situational awareness, active attack awareness, and bleeding control. The students were presented with Texas State University ALERRT Center's Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events and Civilian Response Casualty Care courses. These courses are available to faculty, staff, and students of the NYMC community. Inquiries can be directed to disaster_medicine@nymc.edu.
