Showcasing Innovation: 21st Annual Doctoral Project Presentation Day Highlights Student Research Shaping the Future of Physical Therapy


On April 24, the Division of Physical Therapy proudly hosted its 21st Annual Doctoral Project Presentation Day, featuring the work of 44 students across 10 unique research groups. From addressing health disparities and exploring genomic influences to developing devices that support children with cerebral palsy, the projects showcased the students’ dedication to shaping the future of physical therapy.

Sameh Said, M.D., Leads First Mid-Delivery Open Heart Surgery


Sameh Said, M.D., professor of surgery and of pediatrics at NYMC and chief of the Division of Pediatric and Adult Congenital Cardiac Surgery at Maria Fareri Children's Hospital, led the operation with a team of more than 20 specialists including OB-GYN surgeons.

ACCOLADES

Nisha N. Beharie, Dr.P.H., M.P.H., right, assistant professor of public health, was one of three recipients of the New York State Public Health Association (NYSPHA) Member of the Year Award. The award recognizes current NYSPHA members for their contributions to public health in New York State or beyond. She was awarded at the 2025 Public Health Partnership Conference, hosted by the NYSPHA, New York State Association of County Health Officials, and New York State Association for Rural Health, April 30–May 2 in Ithaca, New York. She attended the event alongside Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.B.A., left,, SHSP dean and vice president for government affairs.

Akos Koller, M.D., Ph.D., right, professor emeritus of physiology, was named the 2025 recipient of the Carl J. Wiggers Award given by the Cardiovascular Section of the American Physiological Society (APS) at the American Physiology Summit 2025 meeting in Baltimore, Maryland, April 24-27. The award is in honor of the section's founder, Carl J. Wiggers, who defined fundamental pressure flow relationships in the cardiovascular system, published definitive texts in circulatory physiology, founded Circulation Researchand trained numerous future department heads and several presidents of the APS. The award is presented each year to a scientist who is a Fellow of the Cardiovascular Section of the APS, who has made outstanding contributions to cardiovascular research throughout their career and has been an active and committed member of the section.

Shetal Shah, M.D., professor of pediatrics, was named the 2025 Thomas A. Hazinski Distinguished Service Award recipient by the Society for Pediatric Research (SPR). The award was presented during the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) 2025 Meeting, April 24-28 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The award recognizes Dr. Shah’s outstanding service to SPR and his advocacy and contributions to advancing child health research, Dr. Shah has played a pivotal role in SPR’s Advocacy Committee since 2015 and his dedication to pediatric research and child health policy has helped shape SPR’s advocacy initiatives, ensuring the voices of pediatric researchers are heard at the state and federal levels.

From the Phillip Capozzi, M.D., Library: Need help during study time? The library’s borrowing services now offer two monitors compatible with laptops, two laptop stands, and blue light glasses for in-library use. The Prism GraphPad program has also been newly installed on the library’s loaner laptop. If you need a break from studying, the library has a selection of games to play.
