The Health Sciences Library welcomes assistance in producing the 2021 edition of the Faculty Author Bibliography. Faculty can submit published citations online or email publication data to japrile@nymc.edu. Publication types include scholarly journal articles, books (authored), book chapters, letters and patents. The publication must have at least one author’s name from the official faculty list for 2021, have NYMC cited as an author affiliation on the publication and have a publication date in 2021. Past year's citations are available online. The 28th Annual Faculty Author Celebration and Awards will take place virtually on Wednesday, December 15, at 4:00 p.m. 

Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer, shared his thoughts on an all-volunteer military in an opinion piece, “Are America’s Endless Wars Partly the Result of Our All-Volunteer Military?” published in The Defense Post on October 29, 2021.

NYMC students gathered for a day full of fun outdoor activities in support of a worthy cause. The NYMC chapter of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association hosted Field Day for Smiles to raise money for Smile Train, a charity organization providing reconstructive surgeries for children with cleft lips and palates. Gillian Hecht, School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2024, has two longstanding passions: medicine and cooking. Throughout her life--she relied on her hobby of cooking to decompress, but upon her acceptance into medical school--she decided to take it to the next level and earned a culinary certificate from the Kosher Culinary Center in Brooklyn during the summer leading into her second year. Dedicated to intertwining her two interests, she helped lead the way in establishing the Culinary Medicine Club and an Area of Concentration at New York Medical College (NYMC) SOM for those with similar interests. Robert Amler, M.D., M.B.A., dean of the School of Health Sciences and Practice and vice president for government affairs, moderated a webinar, “All Access Healthcare, How does the latest COVID-19 information inform your back-to-work decisions?" sponsored by the Westchester County Association on October 28. Sherlita Amler, M.D., M.S., clinical associate professor of pediatrics, adjunct professor of public health and senior fellow in the Center for Disaster Medicine, presented the opening keynote address.

Marina K. Holz, Ph.D., dean of the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences and professor of cell biology and anatomy, chaired the opening session of the 2021 International TSC & LAM Research Conference on October 28. She also served on the organizing committee for the conference which attracts researchers and clinicians from around the world and focuses on the rare diseases tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) and lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM).

Abstracts by Harshada Ketkar, Ph.D., left, post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology, and Sudhir Jain, Ph.D., associate professor of pathology, microbiology and immunology and principal investigator, were selected for presentation at virtual conferences organized by American Heart Association. At the September Hypertension Conference they presented, “Effect of Western Diet on Renal Transcriptome of Hypertensive Mice Overexpressing Human Angiotensin Receptor Type 1,” and “Transcriptomic Analysis of Francisella tularensis Infected Lungs from Human Angiotensin-II Receptor Type-1 Over-expressing Hypertensive Mice.” They also presented “Pathogenesis and Altered Cardiac Transcriptomic Landscape in Western Diet Treated Aged Mice Overexpressing Human Angiotensin Type 1 Receptor,” at the Basic Cardiovascular Sciences Conference in August.

Members of the School of Health Sciences and Practice Class of 2021 who completed the biostatistics capstone research project, “Factors associated with cognitive impairment among older adults in US: Longitudinal cohort study,” under the mentorship of Hae-Young Kim, Dr.P.H., third from left, associate professor of biostatistics, and Qiuhu Shi, M.S., M.S., Ph.D., far right, professor of biostatistics, won the Master’s Student Research Award from the American Public Health Association (APHA) Aging and Public Health Section at the APHA annual meeting, October 24 - 27. The co-authors from left are: Fouz Barnawi, M.S. ’21; Fatimah Alahmadi, M.S. ’21; Nourah Alghamdi, M.S. ’21; Mashael Alghamdi, M.S. ’21; and Enas Alshahrani, M.S. ’21. Padmini Murthy, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., M.Phil., CHES, professor of public health and global health director, was elected to the American Public Health Association (APHA) Intersectional Committee representing the International Health Section. The Intersectional Council represents the interests common to the APHA Sections and facilitates relations between and among them and with other groups within APHA.
