The NYMC community came together on October 27 for a blood drive, organized by the Donate Life Club. The event successfully collected 28 units, which will save the lives of 68 patients once processed. "We want to extend our sincerest gratitude to everyone who participated in our recent blood drive," said Evan Lipman, SOM Class of 2028 and New York Blood Center liaison. "Your generosity and willingness to donate make a real difference, as each pint of blood can save up to three lives. Blood donations are vital for the care of patients and your contributions help ensure that hospitals have the supply they need. Thank you for showing compassion, community spirit, and commitment to helping others."

In recognition of Veterans Day:
By the end of the World War II, 734 NYMC graduates served in the United States armed forces. Among them were Major Louis P. Kasman, M.D. Class of 1928, left, and Lieutenant Arthur Rich, M.D. Class of 1942, right.
Dr. Kasman was an obstetrical surgeon in Brooklyn, where he made the news in 1936 for having successfully delivered his own infant daughter in an emergency C-section while serving as the surgeon on duty at Crown Heights Hospital. Dr. Kasman enlisted in the U.S. Army in the summer of 1942. As a member of the 4th Auxiliary Surgical Group, he served with the U.S. 3rd Army under General George S. Patton. In 1945, Dr. Kasman gave his life during the Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive campaign on the Western Front.
Dr. Rich was president of the NYMC chapter of Phi Delta Epsilon as a medical student. After completing an internship at the Morrisania Hospital in the Bronx, he enlisted in the Army in 1943 and became a battalion surgeon to the 9th Armored Division of the U.S. 1st Army. He gave his life during the Battle of Remagen Bridge, during which the 9th Division captured the bridge and prevented its destruction by the retreating German army, allowing American forces to cross the Rhine.
